Though you had been on many adventures with the company before, keeping watch late at night against a cold cliff face wasn't your idea of a pleasant time. You were sitting next to Kili, glancing between the campfire and the carving he was working on to pass the time. You felt your eyelids begin to droop against your will and leaned your head against his shoulder.
"Tired already?" he chuckled quietly so that he didn't wake anyone. You merely nodded your head in response and groaned quietly when he moved away, only to quickly return to wrap a blanket around your shoulders.
"Thank you," you mumbled, snuggling into the blanket. You finally felt easy enough to let yourself succumb to sleep when the sound of strangled cries erupted from deep in the lowland forests. You sat up immediately, reaching for your sword out of instinct.
"What was that?" Bilbo asked his voice shaky and distraught.
"Orcs," Kili said, his voice dropping low. Noticing how you had gone rigid against him he put his hand on your knee and squeezed it when you looked up at him and took a hold of his sleeve.
"Orcs?" Bilbo was now panicking, but still tried to remain quiet, which didn't really work because you saw Thorin stir a few yards from you.
"Throat-cutters," Fili piped in, a strange calm in his voice as if he was just talking about the weather, "There'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them".
"They strike in the wee small hours when everyone's asleep; quick and quiet, no screams, just lots of blood," Kili said in a hushed tone. Even though you knew he was just trying to scare Bilbo a tad, it didn't mean he was lying; every word he had just said was the truth. You moved closer to him and looked out over the edge of the cliff onto the lowlands where the shrieking was still coming from. You looked back to Kili to see him exchange a glance with Fili causing them both to chuckle.
"You think that's funny," Thorin said accusingly, scolding his nephews, "You think that a night raid by Orcs is a joke?"
You felt Kili tense up and squeezed his hand as his head fell forward , and his eyes up to meet his uncle's, "We didn't mean anything by it," he said, his eyes finally landing on the fire.
"No you didn't, you know nothing of the world," Thorin's words cutting deep into the young prince. You watched your leader stalk off into the forest and turned back to the princes.
"You should know better than to antagonize your uncle like that," you chided. Fili looked down at his pipe and nodded. Kili simply turned to look at you and kissed your temple, nodding.
"We didn't realize that he would react so strongly, I'm sorry if I scared you," he whispered in your ear, pulling the blanket back over you and wrapping it around both his and your own shoulders again so that you were both cloaked behind it.
"I know, but just remember to tread lightly around him, and don't try and scare our burglar off," you teased, but went rigid when you once again heard the cries of the Orcs, and you could swear that they sounded closer.
"(Y/n), don't worry, I'm right here," he reassured you. He wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling your legs so that they rested on top of his and pulled you close enough so that you were almost sitting on his lap. Holding you close he moved back so that were both now resting against the mountain side.
"I know, but still there is reason to worry," you sighed against the fabric of his dark vest. He tipped your chin up so that your eyes met and he leaned down close enough so that your breath was mingling with his.
"Whatever happens, I will protect you. Not that you can't hold your own ground because I know you can, seen it with my own eyes, but if you need me, I will be there," he whispered, his strength still holding its own in his hushed voice, never breaking eye contact. His fingers moved to cup the side of your face and bring your lips to his for a sweet, gentle kiss, one that was filled with hope and promise. "Now get some sleep; we have a long journey ahead of us," he said, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling your back flush against his chest. You turned yourself and nuzzled your head against his neck and he rested his against your shoulder.
"Goodnight, Kili," you yawned, fingers tangling themselves in the laces of his hooded tunic.
"Sleep well, (Y/n)," he let out a small yawn and he too was soon unconscious.
Fili watched the display between the two of you and smiled. He was happy that his little brother had found someone to care for, even if it meant he would have sappy moments, it made him an even fiercer warrior knowing that you were his to protect and care for when you needed him.
