You settle into a comfortable position while Newton settles into the memories. He sighs, rolls his shoulders, then begins.
"...You've been around the mansion long enough to know that Queen's pretty hands-off. She doesn't care much about politics or rules, but she does like to be entertained. When people stir up trouble, she'll let it slide, or worse- she'll encourage it. Attention, resources, whatever they could possibly want. I'm sure you can guess where this is going." Newton eyes Spamton before continuing, but when he does, it's in a more hushed voice.
"Spamton has always been... entitled. He was a real brat as a kid, heh..." He smiles sadly. "He always had these big dreams, you know. He wanted to make it to the top of the food chain, no matter the cost. I know this is before the mansion, but it's important to the story, so... Addisons are made for business from the moment they hatch. Making money is second nature. Spamton, though, it was never as natural for him as it was for the rest of us. He tried! But no matter what he did, he just couldn't bring in the customers the way the rest of us could."
He laughs, the sound soft and bitter.
"You know what that's like? Being an Addison who can't sell anything? It's agonizing!"
"If he wasn't good, why was he brought to the mansion?"
"I'm getting there. Just- Imagine. He was jealous of us, and he was angry. So when he finally got a call, he was vulnerable. He was always very hush-hush about it, but we all knew he had made some kind of deal, because suddenly, he was the most popular out of the five of us! None of us knew what to make of it. He was making so much money, and Lightners and Darkners adored him! He was so proud! ...But I always thought that something was sketchy about it all."
You can picture the rotary phone in his hand, the static, the strange void...
"...All four of us decided to hold an intervention. We wanted to stop him before it got worse. But the others have never been particularly... tactful. It went badly. Spamton said we were just jealous of his success, and maybe he was right. We all wondered, 'What did he do to deserve this? Why isn't it us?' ...It turned into a screaming match. He left. We stopped going out together. Still, we were all worried about him, and that only got worse when in the next week or so, Queen herself caught wind of him and decided to take him in."
His lip curls.
"Don't get me wrong, Queen does a lot for us Addisons. But we're always the people behind the scenes. We make money for her, keep her funded in anything she wants to do, and she leaves us alone. So when she made Spamton her extremely publicized right-hand man, we knew something was wrong."
You can hear the anger building in his voice, and he has to take a moment to calm himself down. It's strange, seeing his quieter, more relaxed personality so worked-up, but you can't blame him. Not when you know the collapse is coming.
"...She made him into a celebrity. When he wanted to start a company, she allowed it, and people were dying to work for the Big Shot himself! Everyone wanted a piece of him. With his caller on the line almost constantly, he was untouchable! So when he made his workers do more for less, when he screamed and raged and fired people over little mistakes, I don't think he ever saw that what he was doing was wrong. His employees went on strike, and when he didn't budge, they all left. And he was fine! His caller kept Lightners coming, and that was more than enough to keep him overwhelmingly successful."
You can see it in his eyes.
"...This is when Mike left, isn't it?"
"...If that's what it calls itself, yes. Something must have gone wrong, because Spamton's calls stopped coming. And so did the money. After the way he treated the people around him, there was no one left to support him. He was desperate. Payt, Clip, and Zinnia... they hated him, too. And so did I, but I still... He's my brother. When I heard that he was getting evicted, I went to his room to check on him... But he wasn't there. There was just this phone off the handle, and I thought I heard a voice on the other end, but when I put it to my ear, there was nothing but garbage noise."
When you shudder off the memories of Mike and green strings, you realize that Newton's tearing up.
"Newton? What-"
"-I heard an announcement in the halls. Queen was inviting everyone to the third floor. She said- that she had something 'very' entertaining to show us all. I- He was evicted, I thought that he had left already... Payt says he tried to steal something from Queen, but- It was an execution. He didn't deserve that."
He sniffs, wiping tears away.
"I watched him die, and she just laughed. He- I don't know how he did it, but some time later, we saw him again. He was so- different. Addisons don't- Look the way he does, Y/N. But- I couldn't leave him like that. He hated us for it, but we made him come back to us. We took him in, tried to take care of him, remind him that we love him. You wanna know what he did?"
"...What did he do?"
"He stole as much as he could and ran," he laughs darkly. "So after that, we stopped trying. He never changed, after all. It was easy to say that he deserved to be on the streets. But I guess I never stopped hoping that maybe someday, he would learn his lesson." He takes your hands gently. "I'm glad you're here to take care of him. I know he can get better, and I hope that you can be the person to set him on a better path."
His phone finally buzzes, and he breaks away from you to check it. He taps something out quickly, then lowers his phone to look at you.
"Prices aren't brutal, but I'm glad we checked. I, um... here." He pulls a sleek wallet from his pocket, takes a card from it, and hands it to you. You examine its face and then flip it over, finding that it's similar to but not quite like any credit card you've seen.
"-Don't think you can steal anything. Think of it more as like... a gift card? It's just a representation of the fund I'm giving you. But, um, I think I put enough there for a good lunch, too. Don't go hungry."
While all the knowledge he's offered you weighs heavy, this still manages to get a smile out of you.
"Thank you, Newton."
"Please, call me Newt." He smiles back at you, shy but genuine.
"I guess I should get on my way, then. Hit me with the address?"
"Right! Yes." He tells you the address, and you do your best to memorize it. "-You're looking for a metal door under a billboard, by the way. I know that describes a lot of the city, but it is the Trash Zone, so it's less common than you'd think. It shouldn't be too hard to find."
"Thanks, Newt."
"Good luck, Y/N. I'll be right here when you come back."
You nod.
You take one last look at Spamton before you go. He's just as empty as before, but... Maybe you're imagining it, but you think his hand might have shifted a little bit. Maybe he'll wake up soon?
Hopefully.
In the meantime, you'll do your best to get him an antivirus quickly.
And look for Zinton too, you guess.
You close the door behind yourself and make the trek out of the mansion.

[[AUTHOR'S NOTE]]
This chapter was a little shorter and a lot more exposition-heavy, so I wanted to post it a little early. Honestly, I imagine this whole scene as a shadow puppet play, like in certain parts of Fran Bow? But that doesn't translate very well to text, so sorry about that, lol. I'll post the next chapter early, too, so think of this as sort of a part two to last chapter! Or like, a cutscene or something. Idk. Don't look at me.
Vote, comment, and subscribe! It makes me very very happy!<3
Thank you for reading! Have a wonderful day!
