Rumbling

Ice surrounds you, cradles you. It rises and rises until finally, the gnashing teeth of each spire curls into the next and spreads into a ceiling, encasing you completely.

The world is muffled into silence outside.

For a brief moment, it's just you and Noelle.

She presses her forehead hard against you, her antlers leaning into your chin and neck. She sniffles, but with one last hiccup, she wipes away her tears and sits up.

"Poff, I-" You start, but Noelle interrupts you.

"Y/N, is this- Is this a dream?"

"What?"

"Am I dreaming? Is all of this made up?"

"No, of course not! Or, well- I don't think so, at least," you answer honestly, surprised by the question. "I know I'm real. And we've been here for a while now, haven't we? It's pretty long for a dream."

"But- but why... is it like this? All of this..." She gestures to the world around you, despite the ice blocking the view of the city. "I don't know how I got here, and it's all so... Strange. And I- I have ice powers! I don't have ice powers in real life!"

"This is real life," you reassure her. "Just... somewhere else inside of it."

You hear the muffled sounds of thick ice breaking. Berdly's not on you yet, but he's getting closer.

"We gotta speed this up, poff," you say, voice dropping to a whisper. "Where are you going with this?"

"I... It has to be a dream," she says, voice quivering. "Please, tell me it's a dream."

"Why? What are you thinking?"

"I can't hurt him. Y/N, I can't- I can't hurt him, not if this is real," she whispers. "Just say the words, and- And I can make it go away. I know I can. But he's- He's my friend, I can't..."

"He's not going to hold back on you, kiddo. You've trained for this. You're going to be okay."

"No, you don't get it, I-"

Berdly's voice calls out pridefully from somewhere around you, but you can't make out the words. He's almost upon you.

"Y/N, just say the words!" Her voice is harsh, but it cracks at the end, leaving her seeming so... weak. But you know better. You can see the ice gathering on her fur, the frost building on her fingertips. She's been storing power as you've been talking. Her focus is at its peak.

The question she's asking you isn't about reality at all, you realize.

She's asking you for permission.

You can feel her power, chilling you to your core. She could take Berdly on, at least for... No, you have faith. She could take Berdly on, period.

So do you tell her? Do you tell her to try and kill her friend?

He's killed so many people at this point, and it all meant nothing to him. He's wearing the corpses of friends and enemies alike. His sins are unthinkable.

If only you had seen it sooner. But it's too late now, and Noelle is next in line.

She needs to be able to defend herself to her fullest extent.

But...

He's just a kid.

He doesn't know any better.

It's not his fault, not really.

And in the end, he's Noelle's friend. She knows him best. She knows if he can be saved.
