The city is cold and quiet as you and Noelle travel the streets to the mansion.
Your head is swimming, but you have more important things to deal with.
You can feel Noelle's eyes on you with every step. Her lips are pulled tight in a quivering frown. She keeps glancing at your throat.
"I'm fine," you push out, answering her silent but constant question.
She flinches, eyes darting to the ground.
"A-are you sure you don't want to sit down?"
"No. I'm okay."
Your throat is sore. It aches dully when you talk.
So instead of trying to talk it out, you continue to walk, but it's only a few steps later before she pipes up again.
"Does it hurt? Can I heal you? I-I have some energy, I could just-"
"You don't need to worry about me, Noelle. Zinton patched me up, so save your energy." You try to reassure her with a smile, but the scratchiness of your voice overshadows it.
"But, I just, I don't... It's so bad. Berdly- I, well-" She sniffles softly.
When you stop walking to look at her properly, tilting your head, her eyes overflow with tears. She tries to blink them back, but they're already streaking down her cheeks as she openly sobs.
You don't hesitate to reach for her, and she throws herself into your arms.
"You were- I couldn't-" She presses her forehead against your shoulder, dripping tears onto your armor. "I was so weak, I couldn't do anything- I didn't think he would really go through with it, he's not- He's not like that! I didn't think- I should've known. I should've done more, I should've gotten to him first, but-"
"Hey, it's okay, I'm okay! Everything's fine, poff. You did your best, and everything worked out. I'm here, aren't I?" You hold her, letting her cry out her feelings into you. At the sound of the nickname, she sobs sharply.
"Y/N, you don't- understand!" Her voice is partially muffled, but the words are clear.
"I watched you die!""I'm right here," you reassure, but you can't help the confusion seeping through.
"Y-you- you were on the ground, and he- He stabbed you and I saw him split you- Y-your neck, I mean, there was this- this long cut and so much blood, there was so much blood- A-and-!" She grips your arms with trembling hands, holding onto you as if you might disappear.
You seperate her from you as you search her face for answers. Her eyes are red and puffy, and her nose is dripping snot. She whimpers.
"I'm not dead. I'm here, everything is fine," you repeat, petting her hair.
"You died," she whispers, voice cracking. "You died. It was- It was real. Can't you feel it? Can't you hear it?" She reaches for your throat.
When her fingertips brush against the skin, your vision fills with spots as searing pain shoots through you. You inhale roughly. It doesn't feel like a scar or a scab- It feels like an open wound.
She pulls away and the agony disappears.
"It's real, right? It's- You're hurt-"
"Zinton healed me, I'm okay," you say distantly. You touch your own throat, feeling a thin divot in the skin. It's just scar tissue now, but it takes everything in you to put on a brave face as pain arcs through you. Your fingers feel one thing, but with the way it feels inside, it's as if it's still an open wound. It's as if you're still bleeding out on the ground...
