one thing most people will never understand is why chris sturniolo and mavis matthews have had it out for each other since they were eight years old.

since as long as they could remember, they had done absolutely everything they could to ruin the other's life or get under their skin.

on mavis' eighth birthday, chris made it his daily goal to publicly humiliate the girl.

his brilliant attempt was to draw an outrageous picture of her and her fiery red hair, which made her incredibly insecure during her childhood, as she felt as if she constantly stuck out from the crowd.

little mavis did not appreciate the artwork he put on display for their entire class to see on such an important day, and she decided then and there that she would never let him hold anything over her again.

while this was quite the vendetta to have against a little eight year old boy who probably didn't know any better, she felt it was deserved.

mavis matthews had always been one step ahead of the other kids. always getting the highest grades, reading at a middle school level three years before she even reached the school.

she definitely had a gift, she was so intelligent and mature for her age that she felt that if it was possible she could recognize why it was wrong, he could do the same as well.

chris was never the smartest, and perhaps that's why he started hating her guts in the first place.

many people they attended school with had their theories, for a while there were rumours that maybe the boy secretly had a thing for her, but he quickly shut those down.

the truth was, it was a mystery to everyone why they couldn't just get along and put their childish bickering in the past.

hatred does tend to stick.

when mavis was ten years old she decided to befriend matt, one of chris' triplets.

she found him easy to talk to, and the two were both quite school smart and found that they were great partners when it came to projects.

becoming close with matt allowed her to also get to know nick, the oldest triplet of the three.

her friendship with two thirds of the brothers made everyone a little uncomfortable at times, there was always so many arguments between the enemies that at times either matt or nick would have to scream at the pair to stop.

once they reached high school mavis only began to hate chris more.

he joined the lacrosse team along with matt... and nick for two weeks before he cried and quit.

something about chris being this massive popular jock guy made her blood boil, and she never understood why.

maybe it was the girls that came to cheer him on like he was some sort of celebrity, or maybe it was the way he was getting so much praise for something mavis found so utterly stupid.

she wondered how anyone could believe there was any mental challenge to the sport.

she simply refused to ever attend a game, despite nick's begging for her to watch with him so that he wouldn't be alone.

now, senior year was about to begin, and it was safe to say that mavis had already not been looking forward to the parade of people who gush over the lacrosse team.

she was currently sitting in her bedroom with her two other best friends, eddie and briar, discussing the upcoming school year.

"can you believe that we're actually going to be seniors? that just feels so surreal to me i can't even explain it." briar laid on the floor, shaking her head in disbelief as she stared at the ceiling.
