the first week of school flew by super quick for both chris and mavis.

chris was busy coaching eddie, even though he didn't really need that much help, while mavis was throwing herself into the school year, already having spent a couple hours on her first project of the year.

chris had been slacking off in chemistry, constantly talking to cara and mingling with other cheerleaders who ran in the same circles as he did.

mavis kept to herself, not wanting to engage with the boy ever since he sent those texts.

nothing he ever said could hurt her, she truly believed that. but the way he asked her to come and then completely belittled her made her absolutely livid.

she felt as if he didn't have the right to say whether or not she was welcome somewhere, even if it was his type of scene, not hers.

she could do whatever she pleased, and she stood by that.

that night, when she had shut off her phone, she decided having to sit through the god awful lacrosse game would be her way of getting back at chris, her way of showing him he doesn't intimidate her.

it was the final day of eddie's coaching before tryouts the next day, and the boys would not shut up about it in the car on the way to school.

"eddie is gonna murder those tryouts." chris raved about his friend.

"facts." matt agreed, dapping him up.

"i kinda hope he takes your damn spot." mavis turned back to look at chris, who now had his jaw dropped open.

"like that would ever happen, everyone knows i'm the best on the team." he laughed as if her statement were the most ridiculous thing to have ever been spoken into existence.

"laugh it up, but your cockiness is gonna bite you in the ass at some point." she shot daggers at him.

she mentally wished for something to happen to the boy, something that would make him rethink everything he is and see life outside of his stupid popular one.

"oh, i bet it will." he smirked, letting another laugh escape his lips.

"so, did you actually get that chemistry project done with cara, or did you two just suck each other's faces off the whole time you went over to 'work' on it." mavis made air quotes around the word, emphasizing the fact that she believed they could never really work.

"uh, no it's not done yet. but we're gonna talk to mr foley and see if we can get an extension on it." he admitted, not seeming to care.

"typical." mavis scoffed, looking out of the car window.

"what's typical?" chris peeked his head around her seat, his face much too close for her liking.

"maybe the way you never do anything in class? literally all you care about is lacrosse, because that's all you can rely on to get you anywhere." she turned to look at him.

something flickered in his eyes, and it almost looked like her words had... hurt him?

"sorry not all of us are naturally smart enough to get into whatever preppy fucking private school college we want. you don't always have to be such a show off you know." he fired back.

"guys can you please not, it's been a quiet week for once and it's kinda ni-

"shut up nick." chris whipped his head back, silencing the boy.
