"hey!" he yelled out, but it wasn't hard to tell that something was clearly off with the girl from the moment she stepped outside.
"hey." she replied, her voice coming out monotone.
"are you okay?"
"yeah."
"you're lying."
mavis crossed her arms, walking around the vehicle to the passenger side door. she took a seat beside the blond boy, shooting him a look once she was situated.
"i'm just saying, it's obvious something is wrong. you can talk to me about it if you want." he said, smiling slightly in an attempt to make her feel comfortable.
"i don't think i can actually." mavis pressed her lips together, forming a thin line.
"oh, okay."
"i do have a question though. matt doesn't think you'll tell me, but i'm just curious and he wouldn't tell me himself." she said.
"oh? i don't see why i wouldn't tell you?" mason furrowed his brows, putting the car into drive and taking off from where it was currently sitting in front of the triplets house.
"i don't know, matt said something about you 'still having a thing for me after all this time' but i don't understand that because we never really talked? you were always with chris most of the time." mavis rolled her eyes at the memory.
"oh... that." mason's cheeks flushed.
mavis sent him a questioning look, before he sighed, turning the steering wheel as the traffic light turned green.
"okay, do you by any chance remember eighth grade?" he asked.
"how could i forget. you and chris were such fucking dickheads. to be honest i was a little surprised you would agree to humiliate me like that in front of everyone, but i'm sure chris was the one pushing you to join him." mavis spoke bitterly.
"there wasn't really a plan for any of that mavis. well, there was, but it wasn't that kind of plan." mason smiled slightly, and mavis thought he looked almost embarrassed.
"then what was the plan?" mavis raised a brow.
"i wanted to ask you out, that's why i was actually walking up to you that day at lunch. i really wanted to do it but then chris kind of embarrassed me in front of everyone and i was already really nervous so i just backed out. it was a bitch move, i know." said mason, already reading the look on the redhead's face.
"i can't believe that's what it was really about. of fucking course chris just had to ruin it for me." mavis rolled her eyes, looking out of the window as she thought things over.
surely, it would be naive for her to think part of chris wanted to keep her for himself even back then... before everything, but she still couldn't help but wonder.
i mean, really? why would he have cared at all whether or not someone wanted to ask her out?
no, she thought.
