Persephone
Everything hurts. Everything fucking hurts. I groan as I shift on the bed.
"Persephone."
I slowly open my eyes and I come face to face with my husband. He looked horrible just like I felt. The next thought in my mind was my Rose, where was my baby Rose?
"My baby," I say but my voice is barely audible.
"Are you okay? Do we need to call the doctor?"
The memories of her pale face flash in my mind and my heart clenches.
"My Rose, I need to see my baby," I cry.
Hades puts his hands on the side of my head, "I know baby but not right now okay."
"Please, let me see my baby." I cry, "I need to see her."
I look at Hades and he's crying too.
"Baby, she's being operated on right now, you can't see her."
A wave of grief washes over me and I sob, I knew and felt that she wasn't going to make it. She wasn't.
"My baby. Hades, we can't lose our baby."
Hades closes his eyes and Hecate pulls him away and stands beside me. She holds me in her arms, and I cry. Somebody took my baby away from me, I just knew it. The moment she left my body I knew someone took her soul. She stopped breathing the movement we got to the hospital, she stopped talking to me. She stopped moving, her heart stopped beating. I just want to say goodbye to her properly.
"You'll see your baby honey." Hecate says softly, "Just hang in there and we will find out who took your baby."
My body freezes and I look up at her, could she hear? What does she know?
"What do you mean who took our baby?" Hades asks, looking at me with puffy red eyes.
"Rose's soul was taken."
Hades looks at Hecate confused, "What are you talking about?"
"When you both entered this hospital, I saw someone, something, an entity. It walked in with you and then I saw it leave, and it had her soul in it. I knew it was hers because she called my name, my real name." Hecate explains.
The room is silent, dead silent, the only thing you could hear was my heart monitor. Hades looks at me and frowns. He comes to the other side of the bed.
"I should have searched for the place before we went in, it's my fault." He cries, "If had, I probably would have been able to identify the person and get her soul back and we could –
"It's okay, I don't blame you Hades, please don't blame yourself for this."
I knew there was no bringing her back to life. I didn't want to. She doesn't belong to me; she belongs to the gods. At least that's what Persephone was telling me.
My mother comes out of the shadows and looks at me, "I know who took her."
"Of course, she does." Don scoffs, "Everywhere you go, darkness follows you."
"Who killed my baby?"
Demeter looks around the room as though looking for approval.
"Speak or get the fuck out," I say impatiently.
"I think it's your, your father." She says nervously.
And then suddenly, Hades has her hands around her throat, pinning her against the wall.
"Hades, let her go."
"I swear on my baby's life, if you are fuckin lying, I will end you, Demeter."
"Hades, put her down, don't make me ask you again."
Hades' head snaps and looks at me. I look him in the eye, and he slowly lowers her to the ground.
"Everybody out." Hecate says, "I need to do my work."
Hades wants to protest but Poseidon pulls him out of the room. Hecate waits for the room to clear out and she closes the door. She walks to my bedside and looks at me, something about her seems off all of a sudden.
"Is everything okay?"
She gives me a smile and nods, "Of course honey, I just need to create a healing potion for you, without everyone tainting the energy."
I nod my head, "How did you know about Rose?"
"Simple baby, there are things that people can't see, hear, and feel, including celestials but I have a rare birth defect that helps me see those things. For example, entities and other things. What took your baby, was a celestial but of a higher power, like Cronus, Hades' father."
"But why didn't you stop it?"
"They had a powerful blocking spell. I couldn't get past it."
I sigh, "You probably going to think I'm crazy for saying this."
She looks at me as she stands beside me.
"I don't want her to come back. She doesn't belong to me."
Hecate looks at me worriedly, "What makes you say that Persephone?"
"As I said, you'll think I'm crazy, but Perse didn't accept the child. From the beginning, maybe she knew that this would happen or that I would lose her before I even got to hold her."
Hecate hums, "That's normal for goddesses not to accept a child, many of the goddesses have lost children before."
"Really? Why does that happen?"
"That's a story for another day baby child. You need to rest baby child."
I lie back on the bed and feel my body getting weak, what was she doing to me? I begin to feel weightless.
"No, my baby. Who's going to look after my baby?"
Hecate leans forward and whispers in my ear.
"Don't worry about her, my brother has got it."
I turn my head and look at Hecate but it's not Hecate.
