I should have told him earlier but it would be unfair to let him leave without knowing anything at all.
After he left the diner yesterday, Joy had rushed to me in panic and whispered.
"Now I know why he looked familiar. Rey. Rey has his nose and mouth. He's her father isn't he?"
I didn't feel like talking about it but Joy asked if he knew, and I was silent. She had gotten her answer from it. And I asked her not to speak anything of it anymore. Especially to Rey.
So, I stood by the counter in the café and watched him sit anxiously at the last table in the empty place. It was way too early in the morning. He had practically arrived before me. He said he couldn't sleep.
I told him to sit back until I signalled him to walk over and meet her. I didn't want him to startle her in case her memory was a blur.
And just like that, Natasha came in with that huge smile, and in the corner of the room, I saw Nick bulk in shock.
"Hello..." Her voice was the usual sweet.
"Hi...how have you been?"
"I've been great. Made a huge deal with my paintings yesterday, if I'm lucky enough, I might be set for life." She joked on the last statement and I chuckled.
"For life? That's a really long time for a wolf."
She just chuckled again.
But then, of course, Nick wasn't patient enough for my signal. I hadn't noticed him move until he was a few feet away from all of us.
"Nat...My God, Nat..." He came straight to hug her. Natasha's eyes widened in surprise and she flushed.
Nick's body had swallowed her wholly.
I didn't know what to say. I just looked at his hopeful face.
Natasha said, "Uhm...hi..." She was so confused.
Nick pulled away. "It's..." He stopped after their eyes met and his brows furrowed. "You're not her."
"I'm sorry?"
Nick made circles on his closed eyelids with his thumb and forefinger. "No, I'm..." He opened his eyes to look at her again. "How are you so identical?"
Natasha looked at him then me, and her face filled with realization. "Oh! I get it. It's that friend of yours that passed, right?"
I nodded slightly.
She looked back at him. "It's okay. She had also mistaken me for her. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
Nick tried very hard to fix his demeanour. "No, I'm sorry I came on you."
"No, it's okay." Her smile was genuine. "She had almost passed out when she saw me, too. I guess that Nat was very important."
