~NICK

I always thought of myself as a protective brother over Nat back in the day, and I've always been that annoying brother who would threaten your lovers behind your back and would not tell you why they stopped asking about you. It was the whole reason why Nat dated and slept around without letting me know.

But then this whole situation made me want to smile...or howl in relief...and excitement. Maybe it was the lycan inside of me.

Hey...don't push it on me.

He's finally realized we've gotten rid of the threat on our position.

Well...maybe...just a little. Who am I kidding? I'm fucking glad.

But the brother in me saw the confusion in Natasha's face. I saw Max's frustration as he clenched and unclenched his fists, not knowing what to do...not knowing how to approach the situation.

As a male, I understood.

As a brother, I had to prevent whatever was happening now from my sister. Her widened eyes were enough to call for help. She hadn't moved an inch since the encounter. I could literally hear her heartbeats from where she was standing. Leila looked surprised by everything. One look at her and she knew what to do.

She turned to Max and I tried not to concentrate on what she was explaining to him at the moment because I knew part of Max's senses weren't paying attention. I understood. I've been in that position. I am in that position.

I walked to Natasha and held her sides. "Hey...hey, look at me..."

Her gaze was overly on him and his on hers.

"I need you to calm down. I know this is too much for you." I whispered.

"What..." She finally broke the gaze. "...what is this? I feel...I feel..."

"It's okay, you don't need to explain."

"I feel like this tugging feeling in my heart. It's heavy. It's..." He turned to him. "...pulling."

"You don't have to do this right now you know."

"What is this?"

I was puzzled. Clearly, she knew about mates, didn't she?

"It's the mate pull."

"Mate?"

I narrowed my eyes. "You're not familiar with the concept?"

Her gaze lowered. "I...I am. Just...my mother she..." And it was like something snapped back in her. "We need to talk. I have so many questions."

"Nick, who's at the door?"

"Shit!" My heart skipped when I heard my mother's voice and smelled her in the room.

We'd talked about this but I hadn't expected Natasha to come here. Or maybe I expected she's sent word before.
