~NICK

I didn't know how I moved but I was speaking like a madman in front of my mother. I heard my daughter. She was alive.

"Oh Goddess, Rey, please stay with me...stay with me."

"I'm right here."

"Tell me you're okay."

"I'm fine."

"Goddess, where are you? Tell me where you were."

"I can't speak right now. I need to go but I'll be back."

"No no no, stay with me..."

"I promise I'll be back."

"Please...you have to talk to Mommy. Talk to mommy. Tell her you're fine."

But it was silent in my head. Silent until I ran wherever my mother was to give her the news. I think she had thought I was also going crazy.

She held my face, her brows furrowed with confusion. "Nickolas...I don't understand a word you're saying."

"She's alive. My little pup is alive." I was panting

"What are you talki...how do you know?"

"She talked to me. I heard her talk to me."

Her face turned to pity. "Nick..."

I took her hands in mine. "I swear...I swear on Dad's grave, I heard her. I'm not crazy. Mom, I'm not crazy.c

"How...how can I know you're just not making this up?"

"You can't. I just need you to trust me. Rey talked to me. She's alive. She asked why I let Leila go..."

She sighed, running a hand on her hair.

"I know you think it's in my head. I know you think I'm looking for a reason to keep her, but I promise...I promise I heard her. She said she would talk to me again."

She cut me off. "Then let's wait."

"I can't. What if she's in danger?"

"What if your head is playing with you? Because...do you even know where she is?"

"She didn't...she didn't tell me."

"Exactly." She widened her arms. "We are in the same square...not knowing where she is. Leila's leaving has also taken a toll on you. What if it's just in your head?"

I was getting frustrated. "It's not."

"Then let's wait. If it's true she's alive, then I won't stop you from doing whatever you need to do to get her back."

I sat on the couch in her room. "But I swear...I heard her."

She sat next to me. "I know you want to believe you have a solution, Nick, but what if it's not there? What if you keep your hopes up only to be let down again? I don't want you to get hurt, most especially, I don't want you to go mad when you have a pack to run. Even Leila is trying to fight to be in her senses even when they slip away sometimes. So don't drive yourself to insanity."
