LEILA'S POV

It was all I could do not to break down for the whole day...accept Nick's offer willingly.

Nick was persistent...always persistent and determined. If I left and ran with his daughter, he would scower the earth until he found us and it wouldn't end well for me. He now had the motive to look for me if I ran...his daughter. And there was no saying what he would do if he found me.

The decision was hard to make but it had to be made for both Rey and my sake. And Nick's.

I had never once wanted Rey to have a horrible image of his father, and Nick hunting me down will sure as hell give her one.

I had to measure all losses and gains as per my baby. Being with Nick would always ensure her with enough protection. We wouldn't have to live in fear that someone might show up in Havenfield wanting to harm us...wanting to harm her.

She would be safe.

And I would be happy.

I spent the whole morning convincing myself that after I cried myself to sleep.

It wasn't such a bad idea.

But my heart raged for me to just run.

That was the thing.

I was tired of running. How many times would I do that? The past had its own way of catching up to you and the next time it did, it would be merciless. So I'd rather get it over with, like ripping the band-aid off.

Like going through your first-ever lycan transformation. It hurts but it's worth it. The bones cracking under your skin felt like a horrible frustration, the pain even more unbearable but once it was out there, the wind against your fur felt worth it. And the rest of the transformation becomes easy...bearable.

I took a sharp breath when I walked away from Joyce's front door. I had gone to inform her that I wouldn't be going to work today with an excuse. A lie, of course. Because that was what I was good at.

I was glad the walk cleared my head but as soon as I entered the house, I felt that lump in my chest again.

I heard Rey playing with her toys in the living room. I smelled Rachel's breakfast.

I had asked Rachel to freshen her up because I knew Rey was still angry with me. But I had to start getting rid of the band-aid soon enough.

So I walked inside the sitting room.

"Hey." I smiled.

She turned to look at me. "Hey. I thought you went to the diner."

I leaned by the doorway then bulked away from it after an image of Nick doing the same hit me. "I thought I should take a break and be with you today."

She nodded...then turned to her toys.

"I know yesterday was a lot." She still didn't turn.

Rip the band-aid. Queenie murmured in my head.
