~LEILA
I didn't know if it was my effort or Nick keeping away from me, but I hadn't interacted with him in two weeks. Except for the times when we accompanied each other to the camps. And even then, the rides were silent, and when we got out of the car, we went our separate ways. I wasn't supposed to feel shitty about it considering I was the one who suggested the one-metre rule. Selfishly. It was selfishly one metre because I wanted him around me. But now his distance was more than what I expected...wanted.
Today, we were taking Rey with us. I wanted her to see the people. Her people.
The car ride there was filled with her chatter and excitement. She asked all sorts of questions...others that weren't even answerable, leaving Nick and I looking at each other foolishly with no words. Luckily, Kayeel was there to answer even the most ridiculous ones.
We arrived as usual and Nick walked to his normal corner with Kayeel. The women in the camp had already gotten used to me, so I headed straight to them. They were excited to see me again.
One of them rushed to us, bending to take a look at Rey. "Look, it's a little female lycan."
My heart skipped a beat. "Wha...what?" I held Rey close to me.
The woman looked up at me. "She is your daughter, right?"
"How did you?"
She stood upright as the other three women approached us. "There's always been a rumour that the female lycan had a daughter before they disappeared."
"I...I..."
"It has always been you."
"How did you know?"
The other woman spoke this time. "There was another rumour that she was mated to the Lycan King of the Crescent Moon Pack and it didn't end well."
Another woman caught up, "When he brought you here it was obvious you were his, by the way he looked at you. And by the way, you avoided him. We, females, know how to collect missing pieces of the puzzle. He is engaged to another she-wolf - which is stupid." I almost chuckled, "And you are keeping your distance because you're mad."
The first woman went on, "And he can't seem to stay away from you. So, obviously, we can all feel the tension."
I finally got the courage to speak. "Why didn't you tell me you knew?"
"We thought you were buying time, maybe you wanted to diverge the attention. I don't know. It isn't our right to attack you for not telling us the truth."
"I...I..."
I wanted to tell them many things. But Rey wasn't supposed to be here.
I looked down at her. "Sweetie, why don't you go play around for a while...but not far?"
