I knew we were screwed. Staying here was not an option. It was either we packed up and went somewhere else or I went back home with Nick. I knew sooner or later he was going to start convincing me to leave with him. But sooner, was not surprising. We all needed to get out of this town even though it meant leaving a whole lot of memory behind. Staying here was risky. Anything could happen.

That morning, I had to run quick errands if I was going to make life changes. I left without waking anyone. Well...Kayeel had been up, brewing some coffee. Apparently, she had made herself comfortable with the kitchen. Or maybe it was a way to ensure the house's safety because Nick didn't even flinch when I passed by the living room. He was still, like a stone. Deep in his sleep.

I mouthed a quick good morning to her before clicking the door open. Nick's men outside stired but later settled. I assumed Kayeel must have linked them to let me through.

I walked my usual way to work, starting at the café where I had to tell my boss that I wouldn't be coming to work anymore due to a family emergency. I told her to find someone to replace me because I wasn't sure how long this emergency was going to take. She was a little sad and I was a little guilty but she agreed and gave me my last paycheck.

I then later on went to my other boss' house since the diner didn't open this early. He seemed disturbed from his sleep so things with him went fast. No questions. Just an 'okay' and a paycheck.

I ran to the bank and finished up my errands before going to a grocery store.

I needed a hell lot of things because I knew I was going to feed Nick's men. Of course, Nick would have them eat somewhere else but I wanted to be a good host. The bags had me taking a cab home.

As soon as it was packed in front of my house, I made my presence known so they wouldn't attack the poor guy. Nick was glaring at me through the window and a few men pretended not to pay attention to what I was doing. The driver helped me unload the bags from his car and I paid him, bidding him a nice day.

He had asked to help me take them inside but I was sure Nick was going to press his throat against the wall and start interrogating him. I'd rather save him from that.

Now it was just me and my bags. I balanced some on my hands and headed for the front door. One of the men nearby opened it for me and I whispered a thank you. He nodded as I walked in.

I went straight to the kitchen, not wanting to encounter the early morning scold from my fuming mate.

Kayeel was in the kitchen, casually sipping her coffee. Her eyes rose to meet mine as I placed the bags on the counter.

"Oh, you're back."

"Was I long?"

There was a small smirk on her lips. "Well, long enough to get him on to me waaaay early in the morning."
