I didn't expect Ayla to take short on considering my request. She had attacked Leila when we arrived and I couldn't blame her. It was my fault I got furious, attacked and killed twenty of her favourite men, knowing full well how she valued every life in her pack. After they had been attacked back then, their population had been so low, Alya had valued every single life like a gem, or else they would've gone extinct. They were rare wolves, and she was a rare female she-wolf who was an Alpha.
I wanted her to feel how I felt when I lost so much. I wanted her to feel the loss. I had lost Nat...then Leila. I was angry and unreasonable.
But when she had held my mate, ready to freeze her to death, she was reasonable. It still didn't make me feel okay with it. It still made me want to rip out her throat and finish the rest of her pack off.
But we were there for Rey...not us. Not our past sins and grudges.
I knew Ayla's parents had died when she was young and I knew she had a soft spot for that. She might not care about me but she cared about how my little girl would feel about it.
I watched as her presence in my living room made it feel chilly and cold. It felt like winter when it was still fall. Her eyes were unflinching as we watched and waited on each other.
It was already awkward being in one room with her when all she was probably contemplating was multiple ways to make me pay for what I did.
"I'm grateful you know what's on my head." Her smile was sick but achingly beautiful. "There are many ways I could have fun hurting you, Lycan King."
I usually hated when she referred me to titles. Or Leila. She's been calling her female lycan ever since she saw her.
"Because that's what she is."
"You can stop lingering in my head." I snapped.
She sat back, leg on the other. "Oh no, I didn't need to. The expression you made was the same every time I called her the female lycan. I'm sure you hate it, but that's what she is." She pushed up again, "And by the way, I haven't seen her around. Does she still need warming?" I heard the smirk in her voice.
I narrowed my eyes at her and gave out a low unintended growl.
"Oh, don't be like that. I did you a favour."
"You only did that to put me in a mess with Ana."
"Of course, I did. I didn't get to kill your mate, which would've been fun..."
I bulked at it.
"...but it was still fun watching the fire rise on both of you. But..." She looked around, "Where's your fiancé anyway?"
"She took a break."
"Finally..." She fell back on the couch, very unelegant of her.
