"I...I'm sorry. She's never like that. She's always nice...and friendly to everyone - "

"It's okay." Nick cut in.

" - she's just anxious after the long travel and maybe I should've told her about...all this, it's my fault - "

"Leila..."

" - I'll talk to her. I promise." I had to move my feet and I had to move them fast. "Again...I'm sorry."

I made a beeline in the direction of Rey's scent. "Rey..."

But all that was an excuse. All the ranting, the running.

I've always been good at one thing. Running. Especially when my anxiety started to creep under my skin. Especially when Queenie is nagging me under my skin.

He's engaged?

'Not now. We have to find Rey.'

You're looking for an excuse not to talk about our mate being engaged.

'It's not like we didn't know.'

Of course, we didn't. Him showing up with the faintest scent of another she-wolf, and also pursuing us, doesn't mean he's engaged. He could've been sleeping around for a while, fine, but engaged?

'Well, it's been six years just so you forgot.'

I didn't.

'And he's a king.'

And our mate.

'Suck it up Queenie, because we aren't causing a scene this time.'

You can't be serious.

'We have a pup.'

With him. Way more of a reason.

'So we're going to let her see us kill his father's fiancé?'

Ugh! Don't call her that. It's disgusting.

'I want you to behave. Remember we aren't welcome here. We are only here for Rey's safety. You make a scene, we ruin this.'

Fine. She said out of spite then mumbled. You should've let me kill her that day.

I ignored her, "Rey..."

Then maybe our pup wouldn't have run off like that...

"Rey..."

And maybe this engagement wouldn't have existed.

I yelled in frustration. "Shut up! Stop whining, you're ruining my concentration."

For once, Queenie was quiet.

I was glad.

I caught the faintest scent of her and smiled, knowing I could track it to her little hiding spot. I was already standing in the garden.
