CHAPTER 11 - There Goes My Luck

Jeff woke up to Crania licking his face, he looked at the clock and saw that it was already noon and no one had bothered to wake him up earlier in the morning. He washes his face and picks up Crania before leaving his room.

As he heads to the kitchen, he sees his mom reading in the living room. "Mom?" He asked now walking over to the living room. "Oh you're up. Had a good sleep, hon?" She asked. "Why didn't anyone wake me?" He asked. "You looked like you hadn't slept in ages. So I just left you there to rest." She replied. "But..." He gets cut off.

"Jeffrey, you deserve to rest. You deserve to sleep in and not do anything once in a while, you know? I know how hard you've been working but sometimes you just have to let loose and enjoy yourself." She said and continued reading.

Jeff kissed his mother's forehead and went back to the kitchen and cooked himself a grilled cheese sandwich. After eating and feeding Crania, he took a shower. And after that he put on a white shirt, wore black jeans, his watch, brown loafers, put his Persol sunglasses on his chest then wore a New York Yankees cap before heading out.

So he walked around town with Crania, taking his mom's advice by enjoying himself every once in a while. Then Jane called and at the same time, Mia called. Two girls, two possibilities but he could only take one phone call. Who's it gonna be?

"Hey, I'm so glad you called." He greeted. "Yeah me too. Is this a bad time?" She asked. "No, it's fine." he replied. "So, uhm, I was wondering if you were still in DC if you'd wanna hang out and grab coffee later?" She asked. "That would be lovely, Mia." He replied and smiled like crazy. Mia laughs, "Okay, I'll see you at two." She said. "Alright. Just text me the details." He said and continued to walk.

An hour later he arrives at the meeting place, he didn't expect their unexpected date to be at the Lincoln Memorial. He looks for her, in a crowd of tourists but couldn't find her. So he carried Crania and took a look around.

"I didn't peg you to be interested in actually reading what's inscribed in that statue." She said as she stood beside him. "I find it very insightful, thank you very much." He said almost sarcastically. "Oh and you brought a dog!" She said enthusiastically. He turned to look at her, "Mia meet Crania." He said with a smile. Mia pets Crania's head. "Why don't we go somewhere we can talk?" She said and then he grabs his arm and they walked out of the memorial.

After buying some sandwiches and drinks, they sat on the reflecting pool that divides Lincoln Memorial and the National WWII Memorial.

"So why'd you bring me here?" He asked point blank. "Don't you just love these historical places? America's former president housed over there, the World War 2 Memorial on the other side. I don't know but it just gives me a little bit of excitement just being around these artifacts and statues like in the Smithsonian or NASA." She babbled. "I forgot how much of a history buff you were." He commented and she giggled. "I like DC, it's where things happen and where I want to spend the rest of my life in." She gushed. "Oh but have you ever been in New York? It's far more exciting than DC." He said. She smiled and was taken aback.

"Don't get me wrong, I grew up here and all but when I moved to New York it was one of the best decisions of my life. I was liberated and free and New York is just filled with exciting things to do..." He gets cut off.

"Wait, hold on a second. You grew up here?" She asked. "Well yeah. Let's just say my dad has a high position in the military." He replied. "But he's retiring soon." He added. "Wow. I didn't expect your dad held a high position in the military." She commented.

"It wasn't easy growing up having an authoritarian figure in my life but I am thankful. If it weren't for my dad and his methods I wouldn't be who I am today." He said. "Right. But I mean c'mon, DC holds so much history that you just get lost in them." She enthused. "And is that a good thing?" He asked.
