CHAPTER 3 - All You Need Is A Break

Jeff went about his normal routine discussing a class by 9:30 AM through 12 noon, then covered for a colleague of his and taught another class at 3 PM through 5PM, and after that he goes into surgery in the hospital and sometimes goes home to his apartment by 4 AM or just sleeps in the hospital. Since he's always on call, he never really has proper rest and relaxation time.

"Dr. Sage, Dr. Feder wants to see you in his office." Nurse Jane, one of the nurses said. "Right now? I have to do my rounds." He replied as he looked at her and found her vaguely familiar. "Yeah, he wants to see you now." She replied. "Oh okay, fine." He said and went to Dr. Ronald Feder's office.

"So you wanted to see me?" He said as he pops his head in his office. "Sit down." Dr. Feder said. "Look, if this was about me not making it to the conference I'm really sorry." Jeff said. "No, it's not about that." Dr. Feder said. "Then why'd you call me here?" Jeff asked. "I'm giving you a month off." He said.

Jeff gasped and was shocked by his notion. "Are you firing me?" Jeff asked out of impulse. "Hell no! You're one of the best neurosurgeons here. I'm giving you a month off and go find yourself or something." Dr. Feder replied. "What? Why? I'm a doctor, I don't need a break." Jeff retorted.

"Look man, you're not taking care of yourself anymore. You're not getting enough sleep, you're stress eating, you're getting fat, like the unhealthy kind and I don't want you to die out of that, and trust me you do not want me to enumerate the countless of sicknesses that can stem from your newly found bad habits." Dr. Feder lectured.

Jeff couldn't say anything, because he was still shocked. "I'm getting fat?" Jeff asked insecurely. "Is that what you got from what I said?" Dr. Feder exclaimed. "Feder, that's my job! I'm supposed to have little amount of sleep. I'm supposed to put others needs before mine!" Jeff debated. "Yeah but I want you to be healthy, Jeff. I want you to be happy at what your doing not mope around all the time or drown yourself in work to be able to feel something." Ronald said. Jeff felt bad, "So please, take your time off and come back in a month. You'll still receive your income and you'll still have your job when you come back." He added. "O-okay?" Jeff said. "Go out, go have dinner with that sexy nurse or something and reinvent yourself, Jeff." Dr. Feder said and signaled Jeff to leave his office.

As Jeff exited Dr. Feder's office, "Sexy nurse?" he thought. "So how was your little trip to Feder's office?" Nurse Jane caught him off-guard. Jeff was frazzled, "Oh uhm, I just got a month off from work." He said. "What?! That's impossible." Jane said. "Y-yeah. Look, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it so don't judge me." He said in a confusing tone. "Okay?" Jane replied and then sat on her office chair.

"Uhm, Jane, there's something I wanna ask you." He said nervously. Jane looked at him in a confusing way. "Uhm, I have this patient and he has traumatic brain injury and I wanted to know your opinion or thoughts or something over dinner tonight?" Jeff said in a very nervous way.

"Very subtle. But I'll take it. It's a date!" She said happily. "I mean like it's just discussing work and all so I don't think that counts as a date, right?" He said nervously. "Call it whatever you want." Jane joked. Jeff smiled, "Okay I'll see you at eight?" He asked. "Sure." She said. "Just text me your address and I'll pick you up." Jeff said awkwardly. "Okay." Jane replied with a smile.

"Oh by the way, do you happe..." Jeff gets cut off by one of the nurses who wanted him to sign for something. He waves to Jane good bye and leaves to go with that nurse.

After that awkward encounter, Jeff went home and decided to google what to do on a date because he hasn't been in one after so long and especially he was fresh from a break up. After thirty minutes of surfing the internet, he lost hope and called two of his three best friends - Chase and Bradley.
