CHAPTER 22 - Everything Is Not What It Seems

A week before Christmas, Jeff was getting busier and busier and so was Camille. One afternoon, while Camille was checking papers and planning the wedding, Jeff was at the hospital working on a special case on a patient that he had been working on for two weeks. Today, he was scheduled for surgery.

He got a call from Camille, they put it on loud speaker and Jeff and his team of surgeons and nurses could hear Camille now.

"Honey, I'm kinda in a middle of something." Jeff said as he extracted the brain, literally. "I just wanted to ask who's gonna be your entourage?" She asked. "Sweetheart, I'm gonna have to call you back." He said now struggling to get something out. "Jeff, I just want an answer." Camille demanded.

Jeff got a little pissed, "Camille, I said I'll talk to you at home. I'm in the middle of a fucking surgery." Jeff raised his voice. The people around him were scared now then Jeff made one of the nurses drop the call.

During surgery, Jeff took a break after every two hours while another neurosurgeon was also in rotation and took over for Jeff, vice versa. It was hard, Jeff couldn't figure out how to gently get the tumor out. His mind was also preoccupied from all the nagging and planning of Camille.

After six hours, "Can someone get me Dr. Sage! The patient is showing signs of a cardiac arrest!" One nurse shouted. Jeff was on break from four hours straight in the operating room, he was in the cafeteria on the phone with Camille and eating a sandwich until one of the nurses ran to him telling him about the situation.

He quickly ran and changed scrubs and moved quickly at the scene. "Did you try to resuscitate him?" Jeff asked. "Five minutes and counting." A doctor said as she tried to resuscitate the patient. "We can't do both!" Jeff said.

Jeff was in surgery for five hours straight now, carefully doing everything he can to save the man's life.

The surgery went on for almost twelve hours. They started at noon and ended at midnight. After surgery, they couldn't do anything for that man and was unsuccessful at removing the tumor. Jeff took it hard and affected him. He went straight to his office and laid down in his couch for a while.

The morning after, Ronald Feder knocked and entered his office, "I heard." He said. "Please just leave me alone right now, Feder." Jeff groaned. "Jeff it's not your fault." Ronald replied. Jeff closed his eyes and rubbed his temples, "This isn't good, Feder. Out of the hundreds of cases like I just had, this is the first case where I couldn't fucking find and extract the damn tumor." Jeff raised his voice and stood up.

"Calm down, Jeff." Ronald said. "My mind is so preoccupied, it's annoying! She's annoying!" Jeff exclaimed. "Who?" Ronald asked. "Do you really have to ask?! Camille! Camille is fucking annoying." Jeff said angrily.

"She kept on calling me while I was doing surgery. She called me during my break. She left me dozens of messages just so we could pick out what kind of candles and flowers we would use for each fucking table! That girl is fucking crazier than I thought she would be." Jeff vented out.

"I worked and studied this man for almost two weeks and I couldn't figure it out. I know it was just a tumor but I couldn't concentrate while doing surgery. I couldn't save him." He continued.

Ronald patted his back, "Don't worry too much about it. It's just one case." He said. "It's not just one case, Feder. You don't treat patients like that. That man probably had a family or a kid or something! And I, 'New York's best neurosurgeon', couldn't even save him!" Jeff raised his voice. "Calm down, Jeff. I get you, alright. You don't have to blame yourself, you did your best." Ronald replied. "I don't even know if I did my best because all I kept on thinking about was Camille getting angry at me for not picking the right menu for our fucking wedding reception." Jeff lashed out.
