CHAPTER 16 - It's Not You, It's Me

Jeff returns to New York City and directly goes back to work. It was a Monday and he went to his first three classes that he's teaching in Columbia before going back to the hospital and going into a 24-hour surgery.

As soon as he finishes surgery he takes a coffee break and Jane sees him but he's so invested in the file he's reading to notice her. Jane approaches him and he's totally surprised.

"Good morning, Jeff." She greeted. Jeff closes the file, "Hello." He said rubbing his temples and sipping his coffee. "How have you been?" She asked. "I look like shit, can't you tell?" He joked and she smiled. But before Jane could speak, Jeff stood up, "Anyways, I've got to do my rounds and I've got books to read." He said as he looked at his watch while starting to walk away. "Jeff, wait." Jane called out and Jeff stopped walking and then turned to look at her. "Aren't we gonna talk about this?" She asked.

Jeff shrugged, "Talk about what?" He retorted and ten started to walk away again. He scratched his head and carefully carried the cup of coffee he was holding.

When he reached his office, he sees Feder looking out the window. "Jeff." Ronald said as Jeff enters and sits on his desk. "Feder, can you annoy someone else tonight? I've got to analyze my patient's illness." Jeff commanded and started to read.

"Do you even know what time it is?" Ronald asked and walks to the chair beside Jeff's desk. But Jeff didn't answer, "Look at me!" Ronald raised his voice while he banged two of his hands on the desk alerting Jeff. "What?!" Jeff raised his voice too.

"It's five thirty in the morning, get your ass out of here!" Ronald said. "Oh shit! I have a class at seven." He said and sprinted out of the hospital. He went to the parking lot to get his spare clothes and showered in the hospital before going to the university. At exactly 7:30 AM - 9:00 AN his class was in session. Then another at 9:15 AM - 10:45 AM then the last 11:00 AM -12:30 NN.

This went on for two whole weeks. Jeff never went home for two whole weeks straight and didn't speak to Jane or to anyone. He shut everyone out and focused on his work, typical Jeff.

By the time his 12 hour surgery was finished that Sunday, he decided to go home. As he ascended into his big apartment he just stands outside holding the doorknob but not twisting it open.

Then he took a deep breath and opened it only to see no one there. He walked to the counter to put down his keys and just below the kitchen phone there was a letter addressed to him.

He was curious and so he opened it,

"Jeff,

By the time you read this, I'm already gone from your apartment. I left because I felt like I shouldn't be there. I thought we were okay, I thought when we came back you and I were still an us. But when I talked to you in the cafeteria, you were so distant.

It's probably my fault because of my stupid accusations and my jealousy with Camille. When you left, Camille told me the whole thing and I really appreciated it Jeff. I'm sorry, I truly am sorry.

I still wanna be with you Jeff. But do you still wanna be with me? I'm back in my old townhouse if you were wondering... I'll be waiting...

Love,

Jane Young"

Jeff thought about it but decided to put the letter on the coffee table, stood up and took off his clothes except his boxers and crashed on his bed. As he lay there, he grabbed his phone and started to browse through his contacts. He dwindled on Camille's name and then Jane's.

Then picked one to call, "Hey." He said into the phone. "Jeff?" She asked. "It's weird of me to call, right?" He asked. She laughed, "Yeah, you haven't done that in a while." She said. "I was just calling in to check on you." He said softly. She heaves a sigh, "Yeah, I'm fine. Hey, you don't have to do that." She said. "It's okay, I want to." He said with a smile.
