CHAPTER 6 - You Again

Already a week in Rome and he has visited most of the places to see except for The Colosseum or Colosseo in Italian. That day he decided to go to the famous Colosseum, since he didn't want to tour alone he joined a tour group.

As they go in the tour head informed everyone about the history of the colosseum, "The Colosseum, or 'Colosseo' in Italian, was once the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire. It was built in the first century AD by the Emperor Vespasian as a place for the people of Rome to enjoy. Originally named the Flavian Amphitheatre, after Vespasian's family name, the man who brought the Roman Empire back from the brink would not live to see its completion..." He trailed off. Jeff then takes pictures of the magnificent architecture of the colosseum.

The tour head continued, "The Colosseum remained the amphitheatre of Rome until the end of the Roman Empire. This was the place where gladiators, lions and those accused of crimes were put to the test, often fighting to the death. Since the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum has suffered from various destructive forces, including extensive pillaging of its stone and marble as well as natural disasters such as earthquakes. In fact, its materials contributed to many famous Roman buildings such as St Peter's Cathedral and the Palazzo Venezia. Yet, even though a third of the Colosseum has been lost over time, this magnificent structure remains one of the most fascinating and beautiful historic sites in the world..." He trailed off again and Jeff trailed off too.

He was busy taking pictures; you know being a tourist that he lost sight of the tour group he was in, until a woman went in front of his camera and blocked the view. Jeff put down his camera and smiled. "Oh you again." He said with a laugh. "Seriously, what is with your fascination with me?" She joked and Jeff laughed. "What're you doing here anyway?" Jeff asked. "Same as you, being a tourist." She answered. "Alone?" He asked. "Yeah, I like to roam the hallowed Colosseum halls and let it speak to me." She said with a laugh. "Wow, a genius and a knack for history! Where have you been all my life?" Jeff joked and she laughs. "Shall we continue the tour?" She asked with a smile. "I thought you'd never ask." Jeff said with a laugh and made Mia smile.

While they walk, take pictures and see the ruins of the colosseum they end their tour and ate some gelato at a nearby stall. "So, what's a world renowned neurosurgeon doing over here in Roma?" She asked as she licked her gelato. "My boss gave me a month off work to go and reinvent myself." He said with a laugh. "Reinvent yourself?" She asked but Jeff became silent. "Hey, what happened?" She asked politely. "Uhm, it's kinda hard for me to say something so personal to a girl I barely know." He said and fell silent.

"What about you? What's your story?" He asked. "I bet you could google me and a bunch of profiles on me would pop up displaying all my information." She said. "No, c'mon I wanna know the real you besides being one of the world's genius astrophysicists and a NASA representative." He said and Mia gave a smug smile. "Well, what do you wanna know?" She asked. "How about we make this a little bit more interesting?" Jeff said as they stand up and start walking. "I say a noun and you answer me the first thing that pops out of your head." He said. "Alright." She answers.

"School?" He asked. "Harvard University." She answered. "Wow. Okay, boyfriend?" He asked. "None at the moment." She said with a smile and made Jeff laugh. "My turn." She said. "School?" She asked. "Columbia University." He replied. "Not bad. Work?" She asked. "Professor at Columbia University and the best neurosurgeon assigned in Milstein Hospital." He said with a smug smile. "Not bad at all. Okay, girlfriend?" She asked. Jeff smiled at her, "None." He said firmly and they both laugh.

"You know, there's just something about you that makes me smile." He said and smiled at her again. "Maybe it's my charm." She teased and they both laugh. "Maybe it's your confidence." He said and looked at her. "I've never met anyone like you... Being so smart and at the same time witty and goofy." He complimented her. "Well, I'm not just anyone." She said, clearly blushing. "That you are." He said with a smile.

So they grab lunch in a little café where Mia suggested and got to know each other more. "Pets?" Mia asked. "I wanted a dog but my ex was allergic to fur. What about you?" He said. "I have a dog, his name is Axis." She said showing him a picture of her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. "So cute!" He gushed. "Now can you tell me about your ex? Why is she your ex?" She asked. "Clue number one, I was always on a leash." He said softly. "Ugh you're never gonna tell me, are you?" She asked. "Not yet." He said while he drank his cup of tea.

"But what about you though? A pretty and smart girl like you not having a boyfriend, surprises me." He teased. "I did have a lover once." She joked. "I'm serious!" Jeff said with a laugh. "We should barter information." She said. "Nope, I'm not ready." He said. "Ugh! You're no fun." She whined. Jeff looked at her as she slices the sandwich, and just by looking at her made him smile in the oddest way possible. "What?" She asked as he stares at her. "I like looking at you eat, it's very entertaining." He said cutely and she threw lettuce at him as he laughed.

After lunch, they toured around Rome more like going to the Vatican City and by nightfall, they eventually found themselves back at the Trevi Fountain. Then a street musician with his band played "Everything" by Michael Bublé, "I love this song." Mia said as she lights up. "Do you wanna dance with me?" Jeff asked politely. "Are you sure?" She laughed. "I've been practicing." He said shyly and extended his hand to Mia and she gladly took it.

So they swayed to the music and had fun laughing. He even twirled her around and did a box step but he stepped on her foot and they just laugh, "Not bad." Mia said with a laugh. "I'm really sorry." He said and smiled. So as the song ends, Jeff bent his right knee and caught Mia with his right hand making her look like she's lying down and he looks into her eyes and slowly assists her back up as his body is pressed against hers. "I think we're about to kiss." He said. "Why don't you go for it, then?" She said and smiled then Jeff leaned in and kissed her.

So they go back to Jeff's suite. "So this is me." Jeff said as he showed Mia around the suite he got. "I'm impressed." She said and went to the balcony. "Wow you can see how beautiful the city really looks." She said with her eyes sparkling. Jeff stands beside her and looks at her, "Yeah but I'm looking at something much more beautiful than the city." He said with a smile as she turns to look at him.

"Mia today was amazing." He said softly as he grabs hold of her hands and pulls her closer. "I had a nice time too." She said with a smile. Then Jeff leans in to kiss her and their foreheads meet, "This would never work." Mia said. "Then if you think it won't... Leave." Jeff whispered. "Don't tell me you don't want this, me." He added and then they look at each other again. Mia didn't say a word but just kissed him and they made out then he carried her to the bedroom where they made love.

In the middle of the night, while their naked bodies are pressed against each other - cuddling, Jeff kisses her cheeks. "Hey, are you awake?" He asked. "I am now." Mia said in a sleepy voice. They both look at the window, "The reason why I didn't want to talk about my ex-girlfriend was that; for one thing, she kept me on a very short leash and it felt like I didn't have freedom to do anything with anyone anymore. Another was that she was so insecure about herself that she depended on me so much to never disappoint her. Lastly, when I finally accepted her and loved her for who she really was I became so dependent on her too, losing myself in the process and not knowing how to decide things on my own. I was so lost when we broke up, like my life was on hold or something. Then we broke up a few weeks ago, because she loved someone else and I didn't even know she was seeing someone else because I was always working and was never with her. I guess what I'm saying is I think she kinda got bored with me." As much as it pained him to say it, he said softly anyway then she turned to face him, their bodies are still pressed against each other. "That's so brave of you to say." She said and kissed him.

"Me on the other hand... I drove away my ex-boyfriend." She said softly as she caught his gaze. "How so?" he asked. "I tried to change him the way I wanted him to be." She said. "And he didn't want to?" He asked. "I was pushing him too much and that made him leave." She answered. "Well, he's stupid enough to let go of someone like you." He said and made Mia laugh. "And she's too blind to see what a good guy you truly are." She said and he kissed her forehead. "What's gonna happen to us tomorrow?" She asked. "I don't know but I wouldn't mind continuing to seeing you." Jeff said with a smile. "And I agree... So what happens to us now?" She said with a worrying expression on her face. "Let's just be in the moment." He said and wrapped his arms around her.
