CHAPTER 2 - The Break Up

Jeff went inside his building and ascended into the 17th floor then unlocked his door. As he hangs his coat in his coat stand the lights burst open. Jeff squints his eyes and sees Camille sitting on the couch with her arms crossed.

"Camille? What's all this?" He asked and looked around to see her bags are packed. "I wanted to leave right away and wrote down the things I wanted to say on this letter." Camille said as she tore up. "I really don't know what to say." She said. "What's happening baby?" He asked as he slowly approached her.

"Jeff, I can't do this anymore." She said as she tore up. "Cam, please let's talk about this." He said. "Jeff, don't make this harder than it already is." She said. "I'm not. Cam, don't go please. Tell me what I did wrong, baby." He begged and hugged her.

"I'm in love with someone else." She said painfully.

Jeff was speechless as Camille gave him the letter and got her bags then left the apartment. Jeff crashed on the couch and cried; he threw the letter on the coffee table and continued to cry.

The next day, Jeff woke up with a sore body as he woke up on his couch. As he looked at the time, it was half past elven o'clock and it was a Sunday.

He stood up and cooked himself a decent meal and ate outside in his terrace. He then tried to call Camille a dozen times before giving up and went back to moping around the apartment and eating ice cream.

Someone knocks on the door; Jeff wraps himself in his blanket and holds his ice cream then stands up to open the door. "Hey buddy." Chase greets him. "I brought Chinese." He added and then Jeff nodded and let him go inside. "Bro, it's only been just a day and your apartment already smells like shit." Chase joked. "It's a no judgment zone, okay?" Jeff said. "So why are you here anyways?" He asked. "You texted me." Chase replied. "Yeah just to tell you I'm fine." Jeff said. "You didn't have to come here." He added.

"Wait a minute, you're avoiding someone aren't you?" Jeff said cheekily. "Me? No way!" Chase defended. "C'mon Chase who are you avoiding?" Jeff asked. "Ugh! Fine, remember the girl from last night?" Chase said. "Yeah?" Jeff asked. "She fucking conned me into being roommates with her." Chase answered. "Conned you? Roommates? What did I miss?" Jeff asked.

"There's this girl, her name is Allie. She told me she's a cook. She was the girl I picked up last night and just this morning she became my roommate. She has the legit papers that she signed and permits and blah blah." Chase whined. "How did she get to move in so quick though?" Jeff asked. "I don't know. I think she's well connected or some shit like that." Chase replied. "And you didn't have a problem with it?" Jeff asked. "That was the problem. I don't know!" Chase said and then they were silent for a while.

"Let me get this straight, you don't have a problem with that or you do?" Jeff asked. "The problem was that I just fucking believed her." Chase answered. "Why?!" Jeff asked. "I don't know!" Chase replied. They were at this for a while until they dropped the subject.

"So what about you, Jeff. Are you okay?" Chase asked Jeff. "Nope but I'll get there." Jeff said and sniffed. "Hey, you don't have to go through this alone, okay?" Chase said. "It's just that, it hurt when she told me that she loved someone else." Jeff said. "I didn't even know she was even seeing someone else." He added. "I feel like she never loved me at all." He continued and sank his face onto his hands.

Then Jeff looked at Chase in the eye and said, "That's my greatest failure." and then he hugged Chase and got a little teary eyed. "I promise it'll get better, bro." Chase said patting his back. "Life goes on, Jeff don't waste it on someone who left you behind. Enjoy your life for someone better will come." He added.

So that night, Chase consoled Jeff and kept him company until he put him to bed by around 1 AM. Chase cleaned up Jeff's apartment before going home.

The following weeks, Jeff buried himself with a lot of work and spent a lot of time in the hospital and in his office because he was reminded of Camille everywhere he looked in his apartment. The break up was tough on him and it killed him deep inside.

So he tried to look for Camille and tracked her down. He asked her friends which were very helpful and told him she went back to Washington D.C.

With a little courage and a first class plane ticket, he shows up at her doorstep and rings the doorbell.

"What're you doing here?" Camille's father, Roger opens the door and asked angrily. "I'm here to see Camille." Jeff said nervously. "She's not here." Roger replied. "Please Mr. Shaffer. I need to see her." He said and started to enter but Roger blocked him and shoved him then pushed him out.

"Daddy it's okay." Camille's voice was heard. Roger goes inside while Camille goes outside. They both sit in the couch that was on the porch and talked.

"Cam, come back." He said. "Jeff you know I would go back with you in a heartbeat but I need a break. We need a break." She said. "Why?" He asked. "I... It... It's all in the letter." She said. Jeff stood up, "Fuck the letter! I need to hear it from you!" Jeff said angrily.

Camille shook her head and stood up, "Go. Just go." She said. Jeff had a confused and angry facial expression plastered on his face, "You're just ending our relationship like that? You're throwing away, two years in high school and five years of constant arguments and making it work?! Not to mention couples therapy!" He asked angrily. Camille was silent and couldn't bare to look at Jeff.

"You know what, fine! I come all the way back here to fight for you and you don't even try to fight for me too. Can't you see I'm trying to save our relationship?!" He said. "Save our relationship? Are you kidding me?" She retorted.

"The past three years haven't been a walk in the park with you Jeff. Think about what you've done to me over the past three years. It wasn't the same and it isn't the same anymore." She said.

"That doesn't give you a reason to cheat on me! To leave me without saying anything instead of writing in that stupid letter!" He exclaimed. "I had no choice!" She raised her voice. "No choice? You do have a choice, to tell me what I did wrong instead of putting it on paper but instead you just left! Giving me a cryptic response as to why!" He exclaimed. "And seriously?! Cheating on me?! Wasn't it you who made me promise that I would stay faithful even if a lot of women like me? I kept that fucking promise and I always put you first." He quipped.

They were both silent for a while and didn't look at each other. Then Jeff broke the silence, "You know what? I never should have came here." He said softly. "Just go." She said. Jeff looked at her as she was about to cry. Jeff wanted to hold her but as he went near her she took a step back indicating that she doesn't want anything to do with Jeff.

"So I guess it's over?" He asked but Camille didn't answer. She slowly walked back inside her house leaving Jeff in heartbreak and distraught.

He makes his way back to the airport and calls work to ask if he could have the day off and then went to bed.
