CHAPTER 23 - New Year Blues

After weeks of unending voicemails, trying to apologize and talk to Camille, Jeff finally gave up and decided to give it some time before trying again.

Jeff and Camille have not made their break up public yet but sooner or later they were gonna have to tell everyone about it. And it just so happens that it was the annual Columbia faculty New Years Eve holiday party and Jeff was asked to present the award for best new professor award which just so happened to be Camille. And when an opportunity presents itself Jeff takes it with no questions asked.

So that day, Jeff finished a twelve hour surgery and took a quick nap in his office until Ronald barged in and woke him up. "Jeff! You promised to do Sam's rounds today." He said. "Right. I forgot." Jeff replied. "Do it now so you get off early." Ronald said. "Alright." Jeff replied. Then before Ronald left, "Hey wait!" Jeff said. Ronald turned to face him, "Thanks again, Feder." Jeff said. "For what?" Ronald asked. "Understanding." Jeff replied and Ronald didn't say anything and just smiled then left his office.

After Jeff did the rounds, he goes home and is greeted by Crania. He carries her and grabs a beer then went to go watch TV. Then while watching the sports channel, his phone rings.

"Hello?" Jeff asked. "Hey, it's Chase." He said. "What's up?" Jeff asked. "I gotta tell you something, man." Chase said. "What?" Jeff asked.

The doorbell rings, "Wait someone's at the door." Jeff said and stood up and went to the door. When he opens it he sees... Chase.

Jeff invites him in and has a frazzled face. Chase took off his coat and sat down on his couch.

"What's going on?" Jeff asked. "Promise me you won't laugh at me." Chase said. "Okay... What's this about?" Jeff asked.

"I think I like my roommate."

Jeff bursts out laughing and Chase face palmed himself. "I knew it! Ugh I knew you were gonna like her!" Jeff exclaimed and laughed so hard. "You said you weren't gonna laugh!" Chase said and rubbed his temples. "How can I not laugh?! This is too funny! I knew this was gonna happen." Jeff said. "Please don't say..." Chase gets cut off. "I told you so!" Jeff laughed.

Chase laid down on Jeff's couch. "Ohhh man what am I gonna do?" He said. Then Jeff goes and gets another bottle of beer and hands it to Chase. "Why are you worried about it? It's not like she's ugly or anything." Jeff said. "No it's not that, Jeff." Chase replied. "Then what is it? Why are you so worried?" Jeff asked.

"This is the first time I've ever felt this way about a girl after that whole Stacey incident." Chase confessed.

Jeff became serious now, "Wow that's big." He said. "I know!" Chase replied. "What made you realize that you actually like Allie?" Jeff asked. Chase looked at Jeff, "Something kinda happened between us during Christmas Eve." He said. Jeff gasped, "Did you two do it?" He asked.

Chase quickly reacted, "No! We didn't do it, are you crazy?!" He said. "Oh I'm sorry. Continue..." Jeff said. "So I brought her home to my family..." Chase gets interrupted again. "You brought her home?! What?! You've never brought a girl home before!" Jeff exclaimed. "Ugh Jeff, will you please let me finish my story?!" Chase retorted. Jeff nodded, "Yeah, I'm sorry. Go ahead." He said.

"Okay, yeah so the reason why I brought her home to my family was that she wasn't spending Christmas with anyone and no one should be spending the holidays alone." Chase said. "And when everybody was fast asleep, I went out to the balcony and looked at the city. She snuck up behind me and hugged me from the back. And while we were outside in the freezing cold in our pajamas, the two of us shared a moment and talked." He added. "Then we went back inside to warm ourselves and we cuddled by the fire." He continued.
