CHAPTER 15 - Cutting Some Loose Ties

A few days have gone by and Jeff was still staying in DC. He even flew out his friend, Chase and his girlfriend Jane to be with him for the funeral of their friend, Peter which was in two days, but Jane was caught up in the hospital and couldn't make it until the day of the burial.

So Jeff picked up Chase from the airport in the evening and he drives him back to his home. While in the car and on the way, they talk. "So how are you, man?!" Jeff asks Chase. "Can't you see from my face that I'm so stressed?" Chase replies. "Allie keeping you up?" Jeff asked. "Ugh don't even get me started on that girl. I'm just happy that I get to get away from her for the weekend. But sad because you know..." Chase trailed off.

Jeff just smiles, "So how are things with Jane?" Chase changes the topic. "I call her every night, I think we're okay." Jeff answers. "Well, that's good." Chase said. "And how is Camille holding up?" He asked. "She tells me she's okay, but inside I know she's not okay." Jeff answers. "I've been with her almost every day now." He added.

"What?!" Chase's reaction was priceless. "You know, it's a tough time for her and I just wanna be there for her like she has been there for me in the past." Jeff said softly. "Not that I'm being insensitive and all but does it bother you at all that she left you for someone else?!" Chase snapped. Jeff sighed, "There was no one else, Chase." He replied. "And how do you know that?" Chase asked. "She told me and I asked her parents and they said she's not seeing anyone." Jeff replied casually. "This is weird." Chase commented.

"Her twin brother just died, man. How can I not be there for her? Peter was our friend." Jeff said anger apparent in his tone. "Woah! No Jeff. I didn't mean it like that. It's just that you're getting close to Camille again while you're with Jane and have mixed feelings for this Mia girl. Who do you actually wanna be with? You can't be with all three, Jeff." Chase said.

"I don't even want to get back together with Camille, Chase. Because I have Jane for Pete's sake! And in Mia's case, I just wanna help her get better. I'm a doctor, I help save lives." Jeff said in a "trying to convince" Chase tone. Chase laughed at the 'I help save lives' bit, "So if you and Jane weren't together, you'd get back together with Camille in a heartbeat?" Chase asked.

Jeff thought about it and was silent. Chase shook his head and stayed quiet. Jeff didn't know what to say, in the days that he has been with Camille, he has gotten more close to her than he ever did in the later parts of their relationship in the past. But thinking about Jane constricts him and limits him from the possibility of Camille wanting to rekindle their relationship.

Jeff sighed, "Camille will always have a special place in my heart, you know that Chase. And I love Jane. Both are amazing girls." He tried to answer. "You didn't answer the question." Chase teased. "I don't know anymore, man!" Jeff gave up. "Being with Camille and her family again in this tough time brings back so many memories of me and her together. These old broken feelings of mine have awoken at the sight of her." He added.

"A-ha! Gotcha!" Chase said. "Man, why do you always do this to yourself?" Chase asked. "Do what?" Jeff asked. "So indecisive." Chase answered. "Pffft! Like you're any different." Jeff retorted. "Okay, okay I deserve that but c'mon man! We're not in high school anymore. The Camille you once knew is not the Camille you know now. Plus, you've got Jane, you can't throw that away!" Chase said.

"Chase, I'm not gonna throw my relationship with Jane away. I love her! I'm pretty sure I said I don't wanna get back together with Camille, not now in this tough time." Jeff replied. "A-ha! Gotcha again!" Chase exclaimed. "So you do wanna get back together Camille!" He said enthusiastically.

"Okay, okay! That's a maybe. Maybe I wanna get back together with Camille someday. But right now I wanna see where my relationship with Jane goes. Don't get me wrong, I love Jane. She's such a great girl and she's been very patient with me, which I appreciate..." Jeff trailed off. "You sound like the Jeff I know from high school. You wanna see where one relationship goes, knowing that it'll fail while preparing a backup so you can immediately rebound from the previous relationship." Chase said.
