For a magus, what is the worst thing that can happen to them? Was it having their centuries old knowledge stolen by another magus? Was it giving birth to a normal human? Or was it the fact that they can never reach the Root no matter how hard they try? They all are true depending on the context and situation, but what if it's the fact that you have a magus that is so pathetically inferior to anyone else that they should have been born a normal human anyway? Meet Matou Koji, first son of Matou Byakuya as well as one of, if not, the weakest magus of the 21st century.

Fuyuki City

Matou Residence

Walking down the stairs excitedly is a child no older than 6 years old. Ever since he began studying magecraft extensively, despite protests coming from his parents, the kid still yearns to visit his 'grandpa'. At the bottom of the basement lies the pit full of Crest Worms and besides it is a door that leads to an old workshop.

Koji POV

I did it! I did it!

I hurriedly went downstairs and passed by the creepy crawlies. The door in front of me is old and creaky, but it has to be sturdy enough!

Grandpa is inside! He got to see this!

*Knock* *Knock*

"Grandpa! Grandpa! Are you there?"

The door creaks and moves to the sides, inviting the kid to head inside. The room is dusty and filled to the brim with cobwebs as if the place hasn't been inhabited for decades. Several trinkets on the table are reminiscent of 19th century Europe, giving the room an antique feel to it. From the corner of the room, emerging from swarms of critters came the head of the Matou family, Matou Zouken.

"Grandpa?"

The wrinkled old man grins.

"What makes you so eager to visit me this early in the morning, Koji?" Zouken inquires.

"Look! I made this!"

"My, it is indeed well made, Koji

"My, it is indeed well made, Koji." Zouken praises.

"Right?! I have been working on this since Tuesday night! It's hard to get it to stabilize like this, yet it works!"

"No, this is useless." Zouken says as he crushes the crystal with his bare hands.

No! My crystal!

"It lacks the mana needed for the use of a catalyst. It's a failure, Koji. Give it up." Zouken says harshly.

"O-Okay."

"You should focus on other things, like training your magecraft for example." Zouken says as he retreats to the shadows.

Koji smiles.

"Yes!"

Technically, creating that mana crystal also counts as magecraft training, but at that time, Koji didn't realize how redundant his grandpa's words are.
