As It Was warnings: none
steve leaves everyone and everything behind for peggy, including his lover and the life he promised them just the night before.

Fall had a habit of setting slowly, then all at once on this part of the east coast. Usually, you can't feel the transition, but today, as I wrapped my arms tighter around my body, I did.
As Steve stood on the platform, waiting for the Hulk to send him back in time, I couldn't shake a sinking feeling in my stomach. He'd volunteered to return the Infinity Stones– all of them– back to where we had found them. I didn't know why, but that was Steve– always trying to do the right thing. I knew it was something he had to do for himself and I just wanted him to be happy.
The whole time his eyes were on me, a soft smile on his lips– the same smile he would wear when he needed to tell me that everything was okay without saying it.
Ever since his first trip back to his time with Tony, he'd been distracted, and I couldn't figure out what it was. I'd figured going back was unsettling, or at least brought up memories he had tucked away. I didn't want to push him. I didn't even consider the old flame that flickered still.
Bucky stood a little bit away, hands crossed over his chest, a strange look on his face. Sam and the Hulk were muttering over the buttons that would send Steve back in time. I turned my gaze over to the still, slate-grey lake. Gloom hung heavy in the air like smog, and we were breathing it all in.
"Ready, Steve?"
He nodded, taking a look at everyone before settling his gaze back on me. A warm kindness filled them, along with something else, something more abundant, but I couldn't make it out. I offered a small wave, slightly jokingly.
He would be gone for what would feel like ages to me. To keep myself sane, I anticipated everything we had to look forward to after this one last stint. Last night he promised me: no more. We laid in bed, the covers twisted around our waists and he told me after this one last mission, no more saving the world. No more giving up our lives. No more setting timers so that we couldn't love each other for too long and risk an entire city burning down because we were selfish enough to spend just a little longer in bed, feeling each other's skin on our own.
There would always be superheroes and it was okay that we couldn't do it anymore. We were only two people. Steve held my hand and raised it in the air above us. I remember thinking how much bigger the shadows from the lamplight made his hand look around mine. Steve sighed into my hair. How beautiful would this exact picture look if we had rings on our fingers? We talked about kids. A summer home in Massachusetts. He wanted to learn how to build houses and I would finally get to teach at a university.
