warnings: if you count cuteness overload as one then WEE OOO WEE OOO PROCEED WITH CAUTION

this is probably one of my favorite chapters so far, it's so cute in my opinion, it makes my heart feel warm and fuzzy and I really do hope you enjoy!

You took in the heavy layer of petrichor that laid itself evenly across the city as your legs carried you on your morning jog throughout Central Park, feeling your steps match up with the tempo of the music that filtered out of your earbuds, and enjoying the feel of your warmup jacket bracing you against the cold.

After a while, you were running in a part of the park that nobody else was in. No joggers, no tourists, no vending carts; just trees and pavement. The thick dark sky extended on and on, just like the path in front of you, and there was truly nothing like the feeling of sweet, sweet solitude.

Suddenly, a small dark mass ran across the path in front of you, catching you off guard so that your earbuds fell out of your ears with the jolt of electricity that rattled your senses and sent your heart rate into a frenzy.

Your eyes were peeled at the bushes to your left which rustled noisily. You recognized your two options: You could be the kind of person you yell at in horror movies and check out what it was you just saw, OR, you could go home.

You were turning over your options in your mind when the small dark mass emerged once again and stood cowering, looking tiny in comparison to the bulky bushes behind it.

Instinctively, you took a step closer. Upon doing so, your heart seemed to melt and run through your veins, making your arms and legs heavy with relief. You rolled up your earbuds around your phone and pocketed it, as you slowly crouched down so you were level with the harmless being in front of you.

"Hey," you whispered as gently as you could to the small puppy. "Whatcha doin out here alone?"

You put your hand on the ground in front of you as an invitation for him to come closer, but he sat in place, his tail tucked between his legs. Your breaths seemed to drag with hurt as you watched the little guy stand apprehensively in his place.

You softly patted the ground. "Come here, little guy. I'm not gonna hurt you, I promise."

When he didn't make any move to come closer, you took it upon yourself to do so, speaking softly and reassuringly, so not to scare him off. Once you were less than five feet away, you noticed the poor baby was shaking, with fear and because of the cold, his fur was damp and dirty and had no tag or collar. The thought of him wandering the streets of New York without a place he could remember as home was all it took to invite the familiar sting of tears to your eyes. Still, he looked so strong.

Your heart ached and you knew with every fiber in your body that you would not leave him out here alone. He's tinier than most things out there in the world, hell, he's smaller than the bush he was hiding in.
