Our Soldier

I was sitting on my doorstep,
I hung up the phone and it fell out of my hand,

"Sir, with all due respect, you are sending one of your own men into certain death," you spoke through clenched teeth, trying to keep your voice low.

It was 3 am, and Fury had woken you up to give you the most stupidest news ever.

"It's not your decision to make, Agent (y/l/n)," Fury remained calm, though he could sense the escalating anger in your body language and tone.

"What do you mean it isn't my decision to make?! He is a team member, goddammit! My team member!"

"The Captain is leaving in three days, and there is not to be any discussion on that. The reason I had decided to tell you first, before telling the rest of the team, was because I had thought you knew how to keep a barrier between your emotions and work,"

"Emotions are what drive me to do my job correctly. Emotions are what tell me right from wrong, and I sure as hell am not going to let Steve do what you have decided, because I know it is wrong!"

"It isn't just me, (y/n). All of SHIELD has two hands in on the plan,"

"Even Coulson?"

"Even Coulson. It took some convincing, and he is definitely not satisfied, but he knows what has to be done, has to be done,"

"So you want to physically send Rogers to one of Hydra's nuclear plants, literally into it, to extract an explosive that could be extracted electronically? In the name of work?"

"You have to understand what we are losing if this doesn't go according to plan. We could lose a-"

"A soldier! An Avenger! A best friend, family member, teammate, and leader altogether! A life is at stake here, and nothing lost is more valuable than a life,"

"Except for SHIELD's confidential information. When each of you signed up to be an Avenger," Fury spewed harshly, leaning in closer. "You each agreed to commit to death if that is what it took to save our system. Society's system."

"Fuck the system," You spat, turning away, and walking a few steps before turning back again, to fix your stare on Fury angrily.

"How long has Rogers known?" You demanded, crossing your arms over your chest, refusing to step any closer to the man who was basically telling you to spend as much time with the Captain as you can, because once he leaves for this mission he isn't coming back. "How long has my fiancé known?"

"He doesn't yet," He replied flatly.

Your mind went blank, and the phrase he doesn't know yet went viral in your mind. You stared at the ground as the silence left the thick air to worsen your breathing, and you began to slowly register how different everything would be without Captain America in your life.
