The biting weather that swirled around New York slipped under your jacket sleeves and clawed at your exposed cheeks. You stood, rocking back and forth on your heels, clenching your jaws to keep from chattering as you pressed the doorbell and waited.
The large door in front of you creaked opened to reveal a man in a plaid button-up, whose hair was pulled back into a short ponytail, the smaller locks of hair near his face danced freely with each of his movements, and it was attractive, to say the least.
"(Y/n)," he smiled and stepped aside for you to enter the new home. "You must be freezing. I would've flipped my wig out in that cold by now if I were you."
"Evenin' James," you returned the smile and stepped inside, immediately taking in the scent of primer and lemon-scented disinfectants. He pulled you into a large hug, holding you a while before letting go, to make up for the three years you hadn't seen each other for. "To be honest, I'm surprised you asked me to help you settle into your new place rather than asking Steve."
"Well I rang up Steve as soon as I arrived but he's out in Tijuana at the moment, so I turned to my best gal friend."
You raised your eyebrows, fully aware of the harmless lie that dribbled from his mouth. He must've not been told that you moved from working out on the field to logistics, and recently, you decided to let Steve handle the local missions only, due to his fatigue and jet lag. But you nodded, playing along.
"So um, I recommend you keep your shoes on. The place is a little– no... no um it's really messy, and if you don't watch where you step, you'd probably need tetanus shots by tomorrow morning." He rubbed his hands down his jeans, trying to shake off the cold that had invited itself in when he'd opened the door for you.
You nodded your head, allowing Bucky to lead you to the living room. "It's a beautiful apartment. You know, minus the piled boxes, loose screws, peeling wallpaper, chipped paneling and suspicious ceiling stains; the view from the window is quite nice."
"Yeah, it's a fixer-upper, but it's all I could afford without asking for more money than Steve had already lent me."
