It's Complicated Part of the Bucky catch-up for preference "Realizing You Love Each Other" warnings: cursing
–✧–
You were sparring with Steve in the gym early in the morning, and you kept getting beaten without a fight. He had you pinned to the mat, and sighed. You looked away from him as he stood up and grabbed your hand, pulling you up as well.
You mumbled a thanks and ran your bloodied knuckles over your palms, walking over to the bench where your water bottle stood waiting.
There was a moment of silence as you slowly sipped your water, flicking your eyes from Steve, to back in front of you.
"You did a good job tod-"
"No I didn't," Your tone harshly sliced into Steve's sentence.
You felt his gaze on you, but you never met his eyes back. "You're right," he paused and slung a towel around his neck. "But there is a reason, I can see it in your eyes,"
But not only did your eyes read conflict, they also read helplessness, sorrow, loneliness, and metaphorical tiredness. You shook your head and jammed your water bottle in your gym bag.
"Bucky," Steve hushed. "It's Bucky,"
"Don't say his name," you spoke.
"But it's her, who set you off," He pried.
Her.
Yeah. It was Her.
You felt your insides liquify, and finally looked up to Steve, holding your gaze on his eyes, as he stared back into yours.
Two months ago, Steve had gone to the coffee shop to pick up some donuts for Tony, and took Bucky with him. Apparently, Bucky had met some girl there, and they hit it off real quick. You didn't blame him though. The girl was beautiful, had an innocent laugh and an innocent smile, she was a gentle soul, and basically everything you weren't but longed to be. Even her name, Petra, it was perfect. You could tell whenever Bucky spoke her name, he loved the way it sounded. But it was always Petra this, Petra that, he would stay up late at night talking to her, waking up early in the morning to talk to her, and any chance he got during the day. He even invited her over for dinner, at least 16 times. Ever since she came along, it was almost like Bucky had cut off all ties with you. She completed him. You were just the best friend who stands on the sidelines, and would never be more than what you are to him right now. Just the best friend.
You sat down on the bench next to your bag, holding your forehead in your palms, closing your eyes, and shakily sighing.
You felt Steve sit next to you, but you didn't look up.
