This was it. Astrid's birthday. The day to celebrate the love of her life who wasn't there. This was going to be one of the hardest days to get through but she was going to. For Astrid. She hadn't heard from Davina all day. She hoped she could arrive but would understand.
Allison showered then changed into a beautiful lace white dress with long black boots and a military style green jacket over top. She put on a little bit of makeup. Then, she grabbed her purse, her car keys and her phone then headed down stairs. She gave her dad a kiss on the cheek, said goodbye then headed out of the door.
It was almost 3:30. Allison promised Lydia she would pick up the birthday cake from the shop at 3:30 p.m. She arrived and walked into the shop. She told the lady at the front desk she was there for a pick up order.
"Name?"
"Lydia," she replied. The lady went to the backroom and came back a few seconds later with a pink cake box in her hand. She put it on the counter and typed into the register. She told Allison the price and she pulled out Lydia's credit card, scanning it on the EFTPOS machine. She thanked the lady then grabbed the box and exited the shop.
She got into her car, sitting the cake box in the passenger seat beside her. She sat back in her chair. Then stared at the box. She lifted the lid. The cake read, Happy Birthday Astrid and Davina, with a heart on the end, white icing and golden edible balls. She sighed and closed the box. Then she started the car up and drove to Lydia's house.
Everyone was already at Lydia's; Scott, Stiles, Malia and of course Lydia. She unbuckled her seatbelt, grabbed the cake and exited the car. She locked her car and approached Lydia's door step. There were fairy lights around the front door and the porch. Before she could even knock, the door flung open. Allison flinched. It was Lydia.
"Oh, goodie. You're here." A big smile formed across Lydia's face as she grabbed the box from Allison's hands and walked inside.
Allison closed the door behind her and walked in, glancing around at the decorations. There were dozens of gold and silver and yellow balloons around the room. Puffy white balls and the golden hearts hanging from the ceiling. By the kitchen table was the happy birthday banner. And on the top was plenty of cups, too many cups. Bowls of food and bottles of soda and alcohol.
"Wow. You guys really went... all out," Allison said, looking and walking around.
"Well, Astrid is important to us," Lydia explained. "And her sister is just the sweetest."
"When's everyone coming?" Stiles asked.
"An hour," Lydia replied.
"Then let's finish," Scott said. There's more? Allison thought.
Allison, Lydia, Malia, Scott and Stiles spent the next hour putting up the rest of the decorations, making sure it was perfect. Slowly, the guests began arriving. And soon enough, the house was full. Full of kids Astrid barely even knew.
"How many people did you invite?" Allison asked, shouting over the loud music.
"The whole school!" Lydia replied, also shouting.
Allison stood at the side of the room awkwardly. There were so many kids, dancing and laughing. People were already hitting the drinks. Plastic red cups everywhere. Allison was just glad the party wasn't at her house.
She stood with her back against the wall and her arms folded. Then she heard a voice behind her. "I love this." It was Astrid. "Thank you for doing this. Even if I can't physically be here, it's the thought that counts. Thank you." She smiled
