Astrid Claire
Astrid moved off to the cabinet by the fireplace. She opened the doors and skimmed through the continents. She smiled and grabbed one of the boxes. She placed the box down on the living room coffee table by the couch. She took the top lid off the box and put it on the floor.
She took out the board sitting on top and opened it up, spreading it out along the coffee table. She put the box on top, grabbing out the little playing pieces. She picked the shoe. And she knew her sister loved the hat so she picked that for Davina. Then she grabbed four more; the boat, the dog, the cat and the race car. She put all five pieces on the go part at the start.
She grabbed the money, separating all of it into the right amounts then placed them at the side of the board. She gathered all the chance cards and placed them on the right section. Then she did the same with the chest cards. Once everything was set up, she called for her family.
Her mum walked out first. "I got the food!" She said excitedly. She came out carrying a plate of cookies and a plate of brownies.
"Hey, baby," said her dad, Peter, to her mum as he kissed her cheek. Then footsteps stomped down the stairs. Davina and Malia. They made their way to the coffee table in the living room.
"Monopoly? Really?" Davina groaned.
"What? It's a good game," Astrid replied.
"Why are there six game pieces?" Malia asked. "There's only five of us."
Astrid pointed to the front door and as if on cue, the door flung open. Derek walked in. He saw the game board set up, all ready to be played. He stopped, putting his hands on his hips. "Playing family game night without me?"
"Of course not," Astrid said, looking down at the board, finishing setting up. She looked back up. "You're just in time."
Everyone grabbed a seat around the board game, Davina and Malia sitting on either side of Astrid. Malia, sitting on the right, reached over Astrid to grab a cookie. Astrid glared at her while Malia shoved the cookie in her mouth.
"What?" She said with a mouth full. Astrid chuckled, shaking her head.
She faced the board and made sure everything was ready. Then, she grabbed the dice and rolled first. She rolled a seven, so she moved forward seven spaces. She landed on a chance card. She reached over for the cards with a question mark on them and read it.
Advance to St. Charles Place. If you pass Go, collect $200
She did just that, unfortunately not passing go. Then Davina went, rolling a six. Peter went, then Areala, then Derek. And finally Malia.
They played a few more rounds. Astrid got up to go to the bathroom, gently treading past Davina and Peter. But then she stopped in the hallway by the stairs. She turned around to face her family, and they were all gone.
She stared at the emptiness of her house childhood house. She walked back over to the coffee table. She dragged her fingers along the top, dust covering her finger tips. She sat down on the couch.
This house. The house she grew up in. Her home.
Footsteps walked through the front door. Her mother. She stopped and stared. "I thought you'd be here," she said, coming over to sit by her. She placed a hang on Astrid's back as she sighed. "What are you thinking about?"
"Family," she replied, looking at her mother. "Peter and you. Him actually being a father, you two still together. My sisters, Davina and Malia. Family game night." She smiled to herself at the thought.
"I'm sorry you didn't get the big happy family you wanted," her mother said.
"It's okay. Because I had you." She looked at her mother. "And Davina. And Derek. And even if it was for a short time, I had a father. And another sister. So, everything worked out in the end." She smiled at her mum. "I'm just glad I'm with you now."
Her mother looked at her sympathetically, not believing her words were sincere. "But don't you wish you were alive?"
Astrid squinted her eyes. "I mean, yeah, I guess. But I'm with you, now. I'm happy."
"Astrid." Her mother turned her whole body around to face Astrid. "I've been watching you. You were happy. You found someone who really made you happy. Don't you wanna go back to her."
Astrid stared at her mother for a while. Then she stood. "Of course, mum. Of course, I would love to go back to Allison but I can't because I'm dead. I sacrificed myself to save her. Please. Just drop it." Then she left.
Astrid walked round the Other Side. The Other Side was a supernatural dimension where the spirits of the dead supernatural reside in a state of purgatory or limbo. It felt lonely but Astrid didn't mind. What got her through each endless day was knowing that Allison was alive and well and living her life. Besides, Astrid always looked over her family. Her sisters, her father, her cousin. Her friends. Even if they couldn't see her, it always brought her comfort to see them.
Next stop of her endless travels, Malia. Lately Malia had been spending a lot of time with Stiles. Maybe being with him allowed her to not think about how she lost her sister. She was usually able to track them down but she was having trouble locating Malia.
She ended up walking through the woods of the Beacon Hills preserve, as if actually being there but wasn't. It was dark. Must be night time there. There wasn't any sense of time on the Other Side.
She walked around for a while. But then she heard a howling. It echoed through the woods. She spun around in circles trying to find the howling. Then, through the gaps of the trees, she saw a wild animal with glowing blue eyes.
"Malia?"
The animal didn't run, nor did it move. It stay there, staring. A hint of recognition in its eyes. Astrid took slow, small steps toward it. The animal took small steps toward Astrid, too. Astrid smiled and chuckled, reaching her hand out.
The coyote howled softly. Then it transformed back into a beautiful, tall girl. Malia. Astrid stopped in her steps. "Astrid?" Malia called out.
Astrid gasped slightly, raising her hand to her mouth. "Malia?" She said back. Malia looked around her, as if she couldn't see her. Maybe she couldn't? Malia stood confused and lost. Like she just lost Astrid all over again.
