Prom wasn’t what Sunoo thought it would be. He thought it would be fun, all those people crammed into their gym and he still somehow felt lonely. The adults had long given up on prohibiting drinking. The jocks had already turned the punch into a cocktail. Some whiskey Sunoo hadn’t bothered to learn the name of.
Flashes of blue, purple, red, and green danced around the room, blinding a few people that accidentally looked at the bulbs. The DJ wouldn't stop interrupting the music to hype up the crowd, it was getting old fast. He sighed heavily, letting his head fall back with a thump as it bumped the wall behind him.
He came here with a friend group, but they were actually enjoying themselves on the dance floor. Truth be told he only came because he didn’t want to stay home and listen to his mom brag about her new boyfriend. She would then proceed to invite him over and force ‘family bonding’, she said Sunoo would warm up to him eventually. Sunoo begs to differ.
The night was getting tired, so he just opted to leave. But at the main entrance they were searching bags of people who left early. Sunoo doesn’t know why and he’s not interested in finding out. So he manages to slip out through the back door of the gym. He stops when the stench of smoke violates his nostrils.
He looks to find who would be so ballsy as to smoke on school grounds. When he sees who, he recognizes him immediately.
Nishimura Riki, but everyone calls him Ni-ki. He’s only a few months younger than Sunoo, making him a Senior as well. Sunoo has always been intrigued by Ni-ki, he wasn’t a loner, per se. Actually he was quite popular, but he never showed any expressions other than a fierce glare that was emphasized by his sharp cat-eyes. But he was always around his friends, who Sunoo had no interest in associating himself with.
So this makes for the perfect opportunity. He’s actually alone. Besides, this would save him a trip home.
And so he approached the younger with his hands stuffed in his pockets. Ni-ki is sitting under one of the overhead lamps, on a bunch of empty milk crates, one foot perched on a crate on the ground.
“Got any more?” Sunoo asks, cocking his head towards the cigarette between Ni-ki’s slender fingers.
Ni-ki looks up through his bangs, which were slightly poking into his eyes. His hair is shiny and jet black, probably gelled. It gave his hair a wet look, like he just jumped out of the shower. Sunoo would be lying if he said it wasn’t kind of hot.
“You smoke?” Ni-ki talks. And his voice almost catches Sunoo off guard. It’s a lot deeper than he thought, almost rough.
Sunoo shakes his head. “No. I don’t.”
Ni-ki stares at him for a second, his eyes are curious- narrowed. But the corners of his lips twitch into an amused grin. He chuckles. He reaches into the pocket of his jacket and pulls out a small box. He sticks his cigarette between his lips while he pulls a new one out for Sunoo. Inside the carton is also a lighter, he pulls it out and extends his hand out to give it to Sunoo.
“You know how to light it?” Ni-ki asks, traces of smoke pouring from his lips as he talks.
