"Hello Pierce, good to see you again." Annabeth stood from her seat, placing a hand out to me as I walked into the living room. The tension in the room was obvious, each of us could feel it. It had been like we were suffocating, walking on thin ice.
"Hi, Annabeth." I shook her hand quickly before taking a seat next to Reese on the couch. Annabeth had been our family social worker, she had been since we were kids. There were times throughout my life when the abuse became too much and we were removed from our parents, typically being put into foster care for a few days to a week.
But it never stuck. The homes always seemed to be worse than our own, my parents just trying to make a quick buck by fostering children. June and I usually got to stay together because we were twins. Reese was always separated till we would finally be placed back at home when our parents had redeemed themselves.
The court always favored putting children with their birth parents even if they were abusive. It was easier for them, with less paperwork and less money. So if you were one of those lucky kids that had their parents do the bare minimum of showing up to a court hearing, they were immediately granted custody back. And this would repeat till I was about 15, and that's when cps just stopped getting called.
"Well let's not waste any time, and get right to it then shall we?" She prompted as she pushed her long black wavy hair behind her ears. She took a seat on one of the chairs, smoothing out the dress she had, and placed the clipboard in her lap. Her skin was tan, an olive color than shined under the light. She was probably in her mid 30's by now, being right out of college when she first started to work with the Gunner family.
I glanced over to my mother who sat directly across from Annabeth, her face flushed as she stared down at the ground. Her hands were clasped together, her thumb rubbing the skin on the back of her hand over and over again. It looked as if she was in some trance, and I knew what had been going through her head. Probably asked herself how it ever even got to this point.
"So Pierce it looks as if you want to gain custody of your little sister Reese, is that correct?" Annabeth asked as she skimmed through all of the paperwork she had set out.
"Yes," I answered confidently, knowing I needed to get Reese out of this house immediately. It would be a process to get custody of Reese but it would be a process I am willing to go through no matter what it took.
"Well after looking through your finances, a study of your home, and all your insurances in line, it looks like everything is in order of moving along with the process of adopting Reese. This would mean you would be Reese's legal guardian till she turned 18, all responsibility for her would be in your hands." Annabeth explained, pushing her black glasses down onto the bridge of her nose as she looked up at me.
"Is....tsk tsk." She licked the front of her teeth as she skimmed through the papers before landing on one. "Ah-ha! And when will Miss Ambrosia be joining us to sign the paperwork so we can move forward with the adoption papers for Reese."
