I bit at my lip, reading over the words written in Pierce's handwriting. The words written on the crumpled-up piece of paper sat with me, and my mind was racing with a million different thoughts. I began to wonder why my mom decided to save these, as if she knew one day I'd find out and would never forgive him.
I thought back to our conversation just a couple of minutes prior, her telling me not to feel guilty for letting myself love him. Although I did, despite her words. I felt incredibly guilty and it felt impossible to disregard that guilt. My mom was the most forgiving person I knew, something I strived to be like one day.
She had always told me after being held by the Vipers for years that she realized there was no point to hold a grudge in life although I had many and that included one against Pierce. Sometimes I wish he would've just told me before we ever became involved with each other, would've saved a lot of heartbreak.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when I felt the vibration of my phone in the pocket of my jacket. I quickly folded up the piece of paper before shoving it into the place where my phone was prior to me grabbing it. My gaze hardened when I stared down the contact "Unknown."
My body stiffened in place as my thumb was held over the surface of the screen. I knew what Unknown meant and I knew exactly who was on the other side of that line. Looking around, I made sure no one was anywhere near me. No one could find out about Cayde or this little game of his would become even more twisted.
"What do you want." I gritted the words through my teeth as I placed my phone to my ear and answered the call. All ounce of happiness had left my body and instead replaced by the stress of what was my reality. I had put the thought of Cayde on the back burner with everything going on.
"Don't be so snappy, Ambrosia." His voice let out a deep chuckle that was filled with anything besides amusement. "After all, you never know who is right behind your back."
All heat left my body at his words, my face falling as I slowly turned around me in paranoia. I was silent, the phone still placed to my ear with my shaking hand. I turned around to see nobody in sight, it was just another game Cayde would be playing.
"I'm not playing this game, Cayde." I gritted my words out, them burning in my throat as the anger rose in my body. I was going to put a bullet through this boy. I was going to end this. I was taking back what he had taken from me.
"Oh, but you are." He teased, letting out a laugh filled with husk. I didn't share the amusement that filled his laugh. I was some pawn to Cayde, one he could move around till he got his victory. But I was done playing this game, there would be no victory for Cayde to win. "Heard that Xander and Phoenix are getting married tomorrow, how exciting is that?"
"Leave them out of this. This has nothing to do with them. This is between you and me." I gritted the words back, clutching onto my phone tightly while my knuckles turned a light shade of paleness. Xander and Phoenix deserved a happy day, not one that would be ruined by the revenge plan of Cayde Matthews.
