Chapter 48

What happened today proved that I really am a weakling. Yes, I beat a thousand year old vampire. But that means nothing because I can't even save a friend. I was mad at him, yes. He did betray us. But he was still my friend. And I loved him.

We made out of the house just in time before people started coming in. It's a good thing there's an emergency exit behind the house. Few people saw us, but Mikhael compelled them to forget. They saw us carrying a dead body and that doesn't look good. We can't leave Cole's body to burn in that house. He deserves a proper burial. He deserves to go home.

Mikhael also compelled a cab driver to drive us back to the school. I am crying non-stop and I feel so pathetic. What happened is my fault. Wala akong karapatan na umiyak dahil sa bagay na ako mismo ang may kagagawan.

"He wanted to help me when Victoria was torturing me, you know. I saw it in his eyes. His pain. I— I can't believe that he's gone." humihikbing sabi ni Jassy.

She's sitting beside me. We're in the backseat of the cab, and Cole's head is resting on my lap. Paulit ulit na tumatakbo sa isip ko ang nakangiti niyang mukha bago niya tuluyang ipinikit ang kanyang mga mata.

I killed him. I killed one of my closest friends. I will never forgive myself for this.

I thought I could manage the situation alone. I'm so stupid. And because of that stupidity, I lost someone important. I'm sure Kaye and Val will hate me for this.

"Olivia. Don't blame yourself, please. This is not your fault." bulong ni Jassy at hinawakan ang aking kamay.

I was too afraid to lose someone again so I didn't want to ask for help. But I lost someone anyway.

Tila nabibingi ako sa mga sinasabi niya. Hindi na ako muling nagsalita hanggang sa nakarating kami sa eskwelahan. Hindi na din ako kinausap ni Jassy at tahimik lang si Mikhael sa front seat.

The school was quiet when we got there. There are dead bodies everywhere. Nakita ko agad si Kaylee na masama ang tingin sa papalapit naming sasakyan. The sleeping spell I used to her can be reversed easily. Even the boundary spell I placed in the room where I left her.

Halos sabay kaming lumabas ni Jassy ng sasakyan. Agad namang pumunta si Mikhael sa backseat para kunin ang katawan ni Cole.

"Zenielle Olivia Sinclair! Where in the hell have yo—" Kaye stopped when she saw Cole's lifeless body. "No no no. This is not true."

Nanghihinang lumapit ako kay Kaylee at yumakap sa kanya. Niyakap niya ako ng mas mahigpit dahilan para muli akong mapahagulgol. Buong akala ko ay naubos na ang mga luha ko.

"Liv!" narining kong tawag sa akin ni Val at lumapit sa amin. "Thank goodness, Barbie is okay. Where's dumbass Cole?"

Maging ang iba ay nandito na. My friends, my family, the Whitlocks and the other students. Mabilis na lumapit si Jassy sa pamilya niya.

Napahiwalay ako kay Kaylee at napayuko. "I'm so sorry." halos pabulong na sabi ko.

"Why are you apologizing? Where is he?"

Hindi ko masagot ang tanong niya. Cole's body is now covered with cloth. Lumapit si Kaye kay Val at may kung anong binulong.

"You're lying." Val said, stuttering. "He's not dead. Take that back."

Kaylee shook her head. "I'm sorry."

Napaupo si Val sa lupa at humagulgol. Agad na lumapit sa kanya si Jed. Even Marcial and Benjamin are crying. I can't watch this scene.
