You and Jeremy had been friends since you were little since before his parents had been killed and you made sure that you were there for him and for the most part he appreciated it, there were still things that you couldn't stop him from doing, he still got into the drugs and became friends with people that didn't really want to be his friend but you made sure that you were there when he needed someone to fall back on. The problem with all of that was that you had managed to fall hard for your best friend and you didn't know if he felt the same way but the only way that you were going to find out was if you talked to him about it and while Jeremy was a good friend of your he wasn't your only friend so if he decided that he didn't want to talk to you, you'd just have to move on.

You walked into The Grill where you knew that you could find him most of the time and you were about to call out to him when Vicki leaned forward pressing a kiss to his lips, you stopped in your tracks, your plan flying out of your head in seconds but before you could make your escape Jeremy called out to you "(Y/N)? What are you doing here?" He asked.
"I was looking for you but you look like you're busy so I'm just gonna go." You answered pointing behind you.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm just gonna go home." You answered turning away from him.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah I'm good, just tired today was a long one." You answered and then you were out the door before he could say anything more.

The next day at school you did your best to avoid him, it was pretty easy because you had other friends, it was easy to disappear into a crowd before he could get to you and you friends were good at spotting him before he spotted you. Elena was a different story and you were pulled to the side before you knew what was happening. "what's going on with you and Jeremy?" She asked.
"What?" You asked.
"You and Jeremy, you haven't been over in weeks and he's getting worse." She explained.
"Right because I have to make him the centre of my world." You answered, your voice was bitter and she frowned.
"What happened?" She asked.
"Nothing happened, he just found someone else to spend his time with." You answered as you attempted to turn away from her.
"Vicki is no good for him," Elena said.
"Don't tell me, tell him." You said as you walked out of the bathroom where your friends were waiting with Caroline and Bonnie who were waiting for Elena.
"What happened?" Caroline asked as Elena walked out, you had already gone.
"She liked him and he chose someone else," Elena answered as she happened to catch Jeremy and Vicki laughing across the hall.

It had been a couple of months and you honestly thought that you were going to be able to slip out of Jeremy's life as easy and you had slipped in but those dreams were smashed when he appeared next to you one afternoon on your way home "I've been looking for you all day where have you been?" He asked.
"In class." You answered.
"Even at lunch?" He asked.
"I was around at lunch. I saw you with Vicki." You shrugged.
"Why didn't you come over?" He asked.
"Because I really don't feel like sitting there watching stick her tongue down your throat and lead you to an early grave." You argued as you attempted to walk faster and put an end to that conversation but the fact that Jeremy stood at 6 foot meant that he could keep up with you easily. "What do you want?"
"Elena said that I should talk to you." He answered.
"So you're here talking to me because your sister said so?" You asked.
"I-"
"You don't have to talk to me out of pity." You sighed "you seem happier without me and I'll just have to learn to be happy without you."
"(Y/N)-"
"Jer this was always going to happen, we both knew the moment that we didn't need each other things were going to change, we're different people from different places." You sighed adjusting your bag on your shoulder before turning.
"Then why'd you stick around!?" He asked, now angry.
"Because I love you!" You answered you closed your eyes letting out the breath that you had been holding but instead of waiting for him to say anything you began to walk away but you stopped "don't worry I don't plan on getting in the way of you and your girlfriend, I'm working on it and you don't have to pretend to be my friend anymore anyway." Jeremy honestly wished that you weren't so fast and so good at weaving through people, in seconds he had lost sight of you.
"There you are, are you ready to go?" Vicki asked as she grabbed his hand, he looked back one more time before looking at her.
"Yeah let's go." He said softly before allowing her to pull him away in the opposite direction.

You hadn't seen Jeremy since you started avoiding him and so you didn't know that he was no acting very different than he had been before and while you were now just avoiding both Gilbert siblings Elena was still trying to corner you in order to get you to start talking to him again and unfortunately for you, you had underestimated how persistent Elena was going to be and before long you found yourself cornered again "Alright what do you want?" You asked.

"I need you to talk to Jeremy." She begged.
"Not a chance, we've settled everything that we needed to, he doesn't need nor want me around." You dismissed her as you tried to walk around her in the hall but she only followed after you.
"That's not true," Elena said as she caught up with you.
"How would you know that? You don't even know what we talked about the last time we saw each other." You reminded her and she frowned before sighing.
"You know they are together anymore." She said and you looked at her and shrugged.
"Is that supposed to change the way that I feel about all of this?" You asked "it doesn't, by the way. You should probably stop interfering with his life, he's a big boy he can make decisions all for himself."
"He needs you." She pleaded and you rolled your eyes before turning away from her.
"He needs a lot of things, I am not one of them." You dismissed her before turning into your class.

Later that day you were at The Grill, you were sitting at one of the tables legs crossed underneath you as you leaned over some work that you needed to finish for the next day, you were so engrossed in it all that you didn't feel the shadow come over your table that is until you started squinting at the lack of light "What..?" You mumbled as you looked up only to find Tyler was standing over your table "What do you want?"
"I want you to come and get your nerd friend so me and Vicki can get on with our lives." He answered and you raised an eyebrow before looking over at where you had seen Vicki earlier.
"Sorry can't help you, he doesn't consider me a friend." You answered as you looked back at your work.
"Hey, you get rid of him or I get rid of him," He warned and you looked at him, you took a deep breath before grabbing everything off of the table and stuffing it into your bag before walking over to Jeremy who was talking to Vicki, you grabbed his arm and pulled him away from her, once you were outside of The Grill you let go and started walking away.
"Hey you can't just pull me out here and then just walk away, you haven't spoken to me in weeks," Jeremy shouted after you.
"It would have stayed that way if you could keep yourself out of trouble!" You called back not even turning to look at him. "Don't pretend that you still want to talk to me."
"I do, I miss you." He answered honestly.
"Not in the same way that I miss you though, otherwise you wouldn't be chasing after her." You gestured back to The Grill bored expression before continuing towards your house where you were going to have to finish whatever work you had left.
"Are you just going to walk away from me again?" He asked.
"You walked away first." You reminded him.
"We need to talk about what you said before," Jeremy said and you shook your head.
"There's nothing to talk about, you still want her." You answered.
"He's just using for sex, she doesn't see that." Jeremy argued, "I just want her to see that..."
"Because?" You asked.
"I love her." He answered and your fist tightened around your bag strap.
"Mmm well, then I hope that you can understand why I need to stay away from you." You said through gritted teeth before you walked away.
"Wait!" Jeremy called and you looked back at him.
"Jeremy you still don't see it! She wanted you for sex and drugs that was it! I loved you and that's why I tried to be around but it just got harder and harder, so I stopped because I was only going to hurt myself by trying to get you to see something that you didn't want to." You explained. "Think about it."
"I'm sorry." Jeremy said.
"Me too." You said softly as you continued on your way home.
