I was shivering on my way back to the Marine base. I spent all the time I could searching for Ace before I knew I had to go back for my own good. The bastard made it very clear I was not allowed out past a certain time and guards would make sure to inform him of the time I returned in the morning.
That stupid kid! We let our guards down and he lures us into a trap!
I was seething with anger. Every local around us must have known the kid was trouble so they didn't bother to 'help' him. The grove must have been abandoned so whoever took Ace could do so quite easily. I deduced there must have been forty people on him for Ace to go down at least.
Mostly though, I was angry with myself. I thought I could have something good and the universe decided to slap me with a cruel dose of reality.
If I had been out there then those assholes would have been taken down so easily. A Kuja warrior, especially a Princess, does not submit to the likes of brutish men.
Between Ace and I, they wouldn't have stood an inkling of a chance.
My Celestial Dragon suit was back on my body and the base was in my sights with the lights shining brightly. Guards held the doors open for me as I went in without speaking so much as a word.
"And where have you been?" The bastard scolded me with crossed arms the second I walked through the door.
I had already sensed him waiting for me so I wasn't surprised and came up with the lie I prepared. "I went to the auction house to see it had been called off, so Ace and I went exploring."
The bastard hums unimpressed. "Where is he now?" He gives me an unamused look with narrowed eyes. "I can't have the son of Gol D. Roger wandering around freely."
I smirked on the inside despite my face staying neutral. I prepared for this on my way back as well. "We had an argument so he's sleeping at the hotel district," the lie rolls off my tongue and for a second I feel victorious.
A second.
"I don't care," he deadpans stunning me. "Bring him back here immediately." He demands looking stern.
I opened my mouth to respond when a deep voice beats me to it. "She can't."
An arm slings around my shoulder and I look up to see my one allie. The only person with status who I can trust, even if he did try to kill me when we first met.
"Ah! Lance," the bastard muses and smiles with teeth. His arms are held out in a welcoming manner replacing the tense atmosphere he previously created.
He didn't know Lance was on my side. I glance up at the man and he gives me a discreet wink which I immediately understand.
Alright. Let's put on a show for the bastard then.
