"It was probably just a joke," Shizuku said as she dug through her clothes.

I was sitting on her bed while she found an outfit for me to wear tonight. When I got back to my room I had shown her what I planned to wear and she informed me that I desperately needed to update my wardrobe. Those were her exact words.

"It didn't sound like a joke."

"Well, I don't know why you're so against being in the troupe. We really aren't all that bad."

I had told Shizuku about what happened earlier. She was one of the few people who I thought wouldn't want to kill me as a result. Something about her felt very trustworthy and kind.

I sighed. Being part of the troupe was something that she had actually wanted for herself, so how could she understand? "There's more to it than that."

   "Like what?" She asked.

"Like, I dunno, just freedom I guess. That's all I've ever really wanted."

"Oh my god, Shiku, what is taking so long?" Machi exclaimed as she burst into her room. "Franklin has been waiting downstairs for you for like ten minutes now."

"Oh, sorry," Shizuku said. "I'm just trying to find something for y/n to wear."

"It's a mission! What does it matter what she looks like?" Machi groaned, bending toward the pile of clothes on the floor, grabbing the shirt on top and chucking it at me. "There, she's got something. Can we get going now, please?"

"Huh, that's actually not a bad choice."

   "Shiku!"

   "Okay, okay! I'm coming!"

I was glad that they'd left. I had felt uncomfortable changing in front of them—not because either of them made me uncomfortable, I just hated my body. I had scars that climbed like ladders up my abdomen. Machi had only caught a glimpse of the damage before. I felt ugly, like I was some kind of monster.

I had just taken my blood-stained shirt off when the door handle turned. I threw the new shirt over my chest, hoping I'd covered myself in time.

Feitan stood in the doorway. "Shizuku said you were up here. Are you almost ready?"

He looked completely unfazed by the fact that I was practically topless.

"Christ, don't you know how to knock? And I might be able to get ready faster if you'd leave me alone."

"Just hurry up," he said, closing the door again.

I pulled the shirt on over my head and left Shizuku's room. Feitan was waiting in the hallway, leaning against the wall.

"You didn't see anything, did you?"

"Tch. As if there is anything to see."

I frowned. He was trying to get under my skin again, and honestly, it was working. I couldn't fucking stand him.

"Let's just go," I said, not wanting to deal with him any longer than I had to.

Phinks was waiting for us downstairs with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

Right, I forgot about him. What a fun night this'll be.

"'Bout time," he remarked as we approached.

I already wanted to deck him.

Our part in the mission was simply to meet the boss at the auction hall, but Phinks and Feitan insisted on taking out any mafia members we met along the way. I wasn't worried about it. Most of the mafia wasn't trained in nen, so we already had an advantage. And after seeing what Feitan did to the ones who were trained. . .
