I sat at my desk in my dorm room, one name on the email, Joe McIntyre and my head started to spin. My mind instantly goes back 13 years ago when I was just in kindergarten. I was the new girl in Mrs. Monroe's class. When my parents left me and the principal walked me down the long hallway to the last room, I remember I was so scared that everyone would hate me. We moved to Boston in the middle of the school year and now I had to make all new friends. The door opened slowly, and Mrs. Monroe stood on the other side. Mrs. Monroe was the nicest little old woman and to this day my favorite teacher.
"Mrs. Monroe this is Ryder the new student I told you about this morning."
She leaned down and smiled, which put me at some kind of ease.
"Well hello Ryder, it's nice to meet you."
"Thank you"
" Ryder, what don't you put your jacket in the cubby with your name on it and sit at the empty desk in front of Joesph."
There was only one empty desk in front of the one boy. I put my jacket in the cubby with my name on it and sat down quietly in front of him. We learned math and science but soon it was outside time. Everyone ran to the playground as soon as the teacher gave the ok. No one said anything to me. I walked slowly over to the sandbox. I felt so sad no one even tried to play with me and for a 5-year-old that has lived in 7 different places since I was born made it even worse.
"So, you're the new girl huh...."
I turned around just as the little blond boy whose desk was in front of mine picked up my pig tail. I hate when people touch my hair, I always have.
"Yes, please don't touch my hair, I don't like it."
He smiled as he grabbed my other one.
"Please don't touch my hair!"
I felt the tug and that's when the boy who sits behind me pushed him and he fell into the sandbox.
"Garrett stop picking on her"
I looked down at him sitting in the sandbox and he started to cry, just before he stood up pushing Joe into the sandbox.
"HEY LEAVE HIM ALONE!!"
I yelled at him, and I punched him in the nose.
Next thing you know all three of us were in the principal's office. That boy Garrett with a bunch of napkins against his nose, I gave him a bloody nose and Joe sat quietly. It wasn't too long before the door opened and Mrs. Pearl the principal called in Garrett. He wasn't in there long before getting sent back to class.
"Joesph, Ryder come in please"
We walked in and he didn't say a word just sat next me kicking him feet.
"Joesph, Ryder why don't you tell me your side of the story."
"Mrs. Pearl, he pulled her hair, and my mommy and dad told me to don't let anyone pick on girls so that's what I did."
"Joesph I'm sure your parents didn't mean to touch anyone either, and for you Ryder, I know this is your first day and you are learned the rules. I also know this is the second kindergarten you been in, but the rules are we don't bully people, why don't you tell me why you gave Garrett a bloody nose."
"He was going mean to me, and I tried to make him not be mean. My daddy has to make people not be mean for work, that's why we move a lot. He told me don't let people be mean. So, he pushed Joey and I had to make him not be mean."
