Hallie had become such an important part of my life. One of the most important things, in fact.
If you told me last September that I would be texting my girlfriend a paragraph long "happy birthday" message- I would've thought you were fucking with me.
But it was happening. At midnight on September 5th I sent Hallie a long message telling her how much she meant to me. That I was going to try to make this next year for her the best she's had.
And at the very end it only felt natural for me to want to tell her I loved her- but I couldn't quite bring myself to.
I was going to be taking her out the following day, and I wasn't with her when the clock struck midnight. But I knew that she would answer.
Two minutes after I sent the text message- she called me.
"Oh, the message was so good that you want to tell me over the phone?" I answered.
"Yes, actually." Hallie said, "I'm saving that text forever. It meant a lot to me. I never knew you could be so poetic."
"Hey, don't mock me." I said, "It takes a lot for me to be vulnerable. Even with you."
"I'm not mocking you in the least." Hallie said, "I'm sorry if it came across that way. The part where you said I am everything you ever needed and wanted got me. In the best way possible."
"Well, I meant it." I said, "And I hope you're ready for a fun night to celebrate. I'll be at your house to pick you up at 6 PM. Pack an overnight bag."
"Please, don't spoil me too much." Hallie said, "Like you- birthdays don't really matter to me."
"Well, your birthday matters to me." I said.I packed my overnight bag and changed into a nice outfit for our dinner. Hallie loves sushi- so I found a place that served all kinds of vegan sushi that we could have.
When I was in the car, Victoria called me.
"Hey. You know I'm on the way to your house, right?" I said to her.
"It's not like I'm really going to see you though! I'm going out tonight with Dean. But I'll still see you when you get here." Victoria said.
"Good." I said, "I hope you have a lot of fun."
"And I hope you do as well." Victoria said, "So what exactly did you have planned, again? Dinner, bars, and then you're staying in a hotel?"
"Exactly it." I said.
"I never thought in a million years you would be doing this for a girl. Even just like...6 months ago." Victoria said, "I can't believe it was Hallie that turned you into a softie."
"I am not a softie!" I said, "I just so happen to care for your sister very much."
"Whatever you say." Victoria chuckled.Victoria's parents seemed thrilled that I was dating Hallie. They both hugged me when I came to their house, along with Victoria.
Hallie came up from the basement looking super cute in a black and white t-shirt dress. Her black and now purple hair was in a short ponytail and I could see that it looked like she took some extra time on her makeup.
"Let's go have some fun, birthday girl." I said to her.
When we were in the car, Hallie said to me, "Can I say something weird?"
"The weirder the better."
Hallie laughed and then said, "I've never stayed at a hotel with anyone before that wasn't my family. And I only stayed at a hotel one time in Mexico with them. After that I stopped traveling- it made me too anxious."
"That's not weird." I reassured her, "I promise. And honestly- I'm not the biggest on traveling either."I parked at the hotel, and we checked in. The hotel was very nice that I booked- it was super modern and sleek, and I got us a room with a great view of the city.
"This is so nice." Hallie said, wide eyed, looking around our room, "I can't believe you did this for me."
I walked over to Hallie and put my hands on her waist. "Anything for you." I said.
