Amy was a nervous wreck.
For a lot of people, the first day at work was an exciting one, because they'd gotten the Job and they were about to start a new journey in their lives.
For a lot of them, much like herself, they'd just finished varsity and were ready to get into their field of choice.
Amy however was not the least bit excited as she wasn't the greatest at dealing with people, she'd always kept to herself and preferred her own space. Of course that automatically made her a 'loser' in the eyes of many.
She never felt quite like she belonged, not back in high school nor at home with her family. She was always the oddball. But she didn't want that to be the case in her work too.
So deciding that she was going to make a great first impression, even if she had to fake it, she'd set about looking really good on her first day at work.
She went into the depths of her closet and took out some clothes her sister had passed down to her many months before. It was in an effort to get her a little out of her shell but she never wanted to come out, she loved it in there. She could be whatever she wanted.
But she knew that in order to fit in at her workplace, she had to dial down her need for personal space.
The job she'd gotten was entry level but she'd planned to work her way to the top. Coopers and Co. was a big Company that had plenty of room for growth so it was imperative that she made a good impression on every single person there, because you never know where the opportunity could come from. At least that was what the internet said.
She was determined to be the best version of herself she could possibly be.
So she'd taken out the tight pencil skirt she'd sworn not to wear and she matched it with a cream caramel blouse that had made a home at the back of her closet. The light brown stilettos that she didn't even remember where they came from perfectly brought the look together.
She'd even decided to put a little makeup on and she'd been beyond happy with the results. Having watched the many YouTube videos she had, she was glad to see the work translated.
As Amy walked up the pathway of a place that was yet to become a norm to her, she found herself feeling a sense of belonging.
People weren't looking her up and down weirdly, wondering what she was doing there nor were they judging her choice of attire. Because she looked like them. All society ever wanted after all was for its people to abide by its rules.
She'd arrived at the main reception as she was instructed and was hardly surprised by the foyer that was filled with her peers. They were then redirected into an empty hall where they were told to wait.
Coopers and Co. created a program that allowed a lot of engineering graduates to intern for a year. They would then keep a selected few based on performance as they couldn't keep everyone at the end of the program.
The company was big but it was known to keep only the best of the best.
So of course anyone would give anything to be kept, though the year's experience on its own could get you very far.
It looked pretty on the resume.
She'd blended in with the crowd and even felt herself getting a little more comfortable with the day's event. People smiled at her and engaged in conversation and she didn't hate that one bit.
