It had been more night than morning when the couple made it to the office campus.

There was no telling how far the media would go to paint him how they wished him to be perceived and he was sure his place of employment would be flooded with paparazzi at any moment.

They called it the downfall of the Coopers.

Even the most powerful family in the country had their judgment day... of course the world rejoiced in that.

It didn't matter whether or not the subject was innocent.

There was something about seeing the 'untouchable' finally get their karma.

Perhaps seeing that made them feel a lot less shitty about their own miserable lives.

The people fortunate enough to have shared meals and festivities with the infamous family were not even on their side.

"They were never on our side."
Jason had told Amy.

"In our world, no one is ever on your side, not really. They will smile in your face and wish you dead in the same breath."
He'd continued.

"But it does go away eventually. They get bored and move on... that I can promise you, my love."

He'd continued trying to calm her down.

He didn't care what was going on in the media, he cared that she felt safe and cared for.

He didn't want to give her any more reason to not want to be a part of his world.

"Our, 'friends', of course, eventually come around too when things look up again."

Amy looked back at him in shock.

"Yup. Why do you think I never had friends in my world? Nobody is loyal and everyone is only ever after status and money."

He'd said opening up the drawers of his office desk in haste, seemingly looking for something.

"But why allow them back in? If you know they don't have your best interest at heart, why would you want them around?"

Jason stopped his search to give her a genuine smile.

The truth was that it was more complicated than he cared to explain. Having and maintaining a relationship with these backstabbers was more beneficial to them than not.

Something about keeping your enemies closer...

But Jason spared her all the details and instead chose to say,

"You are so... pure. Promise me you'll never let this world poison you?"

All he needed was the guiltless look on her face to have his confirmation.

The worst was still yet to come and he had much to do before the board meeting that morning.

So Jason spent the next few hours working on compiling all that he'd done for the company since his appointment and some of what he planned to do.
