The air tensed and the moment stood at a standstill.

The worst interaction Amy had ever had with the older, much scarier lady was when she'd asked her where the bathroom was on the first day at work, and she pretty much dismissed her and told her she wasn't a maid.

Amy was sure she started disliking her from that moment on.

To be fair, she didn't really like anyone.

Except her boss of course.

The two were like two peas in a pod, never one without the other. It was a respectful relationship that they'd shared and Jason had even told her about how she was the only person who made her feel welcome when he arrived.

Everyone else figured he wasn't very different from his father so they kept their distance.

But as the lady looked at her in what resembled pure disdain, it was very clear she did not approve.

"I... thanks, I've been looking for that. I lost it when Mr. Cooper called me into his office on Monday. Thank you for keeping it for me."

Why had she kept it until Friday? Was it for a dramatic effect? Amy didn't ask. The moment was already difficult as it was.

"Ms. Rutherford, every single person you've seen in this room, in this company, has worked really hard to be where they are. Nobody cut corners, and if they did, they didn't last."

There it was. The discredit she'd been afraid of.

Ms. Viera's word was very important to Jason, she'd heard it from the horse's mouth. At that point Amy wasn't worried about getting fired. She was worried that Jason was likely going to keep her in the company, providing the older lady with a fake confirmation that he did indeed favor her.

But even though Jason might've really favored her, he knew that she was very good at her job. He knew because he saw for himself. From the incredible thesis that she wrote in varsity, to how she spoke about the craft... she had a passion for it.

Amy knew that was unfair because it left the other interns at a disadvantage.

They didn't have the opportunity to be close enough to the CEO so he could personally see that they were also good at their job.

Though she sympathized and acknowledged that privilege, it wasn't her big worry. The big worry was that it wouldn't matter if she were or wasn't good at her job.

Everyone was going to assume she'd gotten where she was because she was aided.

Her hard work was going to be flushed down the toilet simply because she was dating a man in power, who also happened to be her boss.

That was what happened with women anyway.

'She obviously got to where she is because of... *insert successful male figure*'

Amy had thought about her relationship's possible repercussions, she couldn't not, but it was at that moment that everything became real.

Dating Jason meant compromising her integrity. It was truly one thing or the other, there was no middle ground, the world they lived in didn't allow it.
