The first thing I hear when I wake up is a knocking on my door. I roll over, groaning for whoever it is to come in. I slept like shit last night. This can't bode well for me today.

"Jade, honey?" My mom asks as she sits at my feet. "Are you awake?"

"I am now." I bury my face in my pillow. "What time is it?"

"About 6. This is when you asked me to wake you up, right?"

"Yeah."

"Are you excited for the exam?"

I swallow the lump in my throat that comes up every time I think about the entrance exam to UA's hero course. I applied halfway as a joke, but I never thought I'd actually have to do it.

"Yeah, a little." I lie.

"Well, hurry up and get dressed so you can eat breakfast, alright?" Mom pats my shoulder as she stands up. I hear her exit my room, shutting the door behind her.

I force myself out of bed and begin gathering my clothes for the day. From what I remember, the exam is a written portion and a practical exercise. I should wear something nice, presentable, and comfortable, but keep a change of athletic clothes just in case.

For the presentable clothes, I choose a simple lavender-colored sweater and a white skirt with lavender flowers. I wiggle myself into some thermal tights as well, seeing as the weather isn't quite warm enough to go without them just yet. I roll some purple socks around my ankles and grab some white Mary Janes to put on by the door.

As far as my hair goes, I don't really want to have to spend time pulling it up, so I brush the dark waves back into a low ponytail, keeping it just loose enough that I won't get a headache later from the tension.

The athletic clothes are a different battle. I know it shouldn't matter, but I want to look cute even in the practical exam. I select my baby blue set, a sports bra and leggings. Before I leave, I also toss a black windbreaker and sneakers into my bag.

I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Cute.

Breakfast is a simple plate of hash browns and pancakes. I scarf it down, even though the anxiety coursing through me is begging me not to eat. I grab a few protein bars on my way out. Stopping by the door, I slide my Mary Janes on and grab my coat.

As soon as I step outside, I realize how good of an idea the thermal tights were. There's not a lot of wind, but it's still not entirely warm.

The walk to the train station is a blur. So is the ride to UA. I have to remind myself to breathe. UA has its entrance exams earlier than most high schools, so if I fail, I can apply and test into other schools. I won't be shit out of luck if I don't do well today.

There are a multitude of students making the same walk I am. Are their worlds closing in on them the same way mine is?

The UA insignia welcomes me in. I can't believe I'm actually on the UA grounds right now!

I'm so lost in thought that I completely do not see the person right in front of me and bump right into him.

"Pardon me!" He turns back to face me. He's in ... a beige suit for some reason. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." I straighten out my coat. "I'm really sorry."

"Don't be!" He laughs. "Lost in thought?"

"Kind of, yeah. Just ... pre-test nerves."

"You're here for the entrance exam as well?"

"Yeah."
