I shoot up, throwing my blankets around wildly. My breathing is shallow and my skin is covered in sweat that freezes to me. Heart racing, I try to calm myself down by repeating that it was just a nightmare and it wasn't real. Still, it felt real to me. Even if it's been a day since the attack, it replays in my mind over and over again.
I try to lay back down, close my eyes and go back to bed, but it's quickly made clear that I'm not going to be able to go back to sleep. I grab my phone to check the time. 1 AM. Are you serious? I groan.
Maybe I should see if one of my friends is awake. I scroll through the names on my phone, looking for someone who might understand what I'm feeling right now. Tenya was with me during the attack, I could text him. Do I really want to bother him at this hour right now? He's probably asleep, but on the off chance he's not ...
I type out a quick, "Hey are you awake?"
He responds back almost immediately, "As a matter of fact, I am. Is everything alright?"
"Would you be able to call me?"
I barely hit send when my phone begins to buzz, his name covering my screen.
"Jade, is everything alright?" He asks softly.
"I-" I pause. How am I supposed to tell him it was just a bad dream? "I just ... it's stupid, I'm sorry."
"No, I don't think it is stupid. You wouldn't make a request such as this if you weren't in distress. I'm your friend remember? You can talk to me."
"I just had a nightmare and it spooked me pretty bad is all. It's really nothing."
"Again, Jade, I don't think it is nothing." There's a sound of him shuffling around in bed. "If it eases your worries any, I was also awoken by a nightmare, so I'm quite glad you and I are talking."
"You're probably the only one who fully understands how I feel right now, and honestly I just needed to hear your voice. I know we didn't have to fight, but I just keep thinking about what would have happened if we didn't make it in time."
"I understand completely. That's an anxiety of mine as well. But, it's important to focus on the fact that we did arrive in time. Keep yourself grounded in what did happen rather than what could have."
"You're probably right." I sigh.
"Let's not talk about what happened today. Let's talk about something more comforting." He says.
"Like what?"
"Tell me about something you like. It could be anything."
"Uh, why?"
"Because I like hearing you talk, and I want to get to know you more."
I settle myself into bed more comfortably and put Tenya on speaker. "I guess ... I really like bees."
"You do?"
"Yeah! They're so sweet and actually super chill. I love how cute their little bodies are and they're so important to the environment. Did you know my dad actually had a coworker who lives out in the country who lets us keep bees on their land? We get fresh honey and it's so much better than anything you could buy at a store. You can just eat the honey straight out of the hive, you don't have to do anything with it." I let myself fully nerd out about bees. "Oh, and honey is actually really healthy for you. It's antibacterial, which means it's great when you have a cold and local honey is great for allergies because it introduces your immune system to the local pollen."
"Would your father be interested in selling his honey? We get ours imported from overseas, but if it has all the benefits you're describing, then perhaps it would be wise to use locally sourced honey."
