I silently groan when I wake up. Sparring day. Guess this is the day I die. Tenya's sent me a good morning text. I reply back with the same energy, even as the dread sinks into my bones. How the hell am I supposed to fight Bakugo and survive?
I change into my costume in the bathroom, trying to lie to myself and say it's maybe not going to go as terribly as I'm thinking it will.
Of course, I know I'm wrong.
Jeanist takes us to a small, empty room. "The rules are simple. Use your quirks in any way that you see fit. I'll step in if I think it's getting too rough. You win by forcing your opponent to give up or by immobilizing your opponent for thirty seconds. I'll be in the observation room. Your time starts when I give you the signal."
I swallow hard. Bakugo looks at me with bloodlust in his eyes. Jeanist leaves.
What's to stop Bakugo from murdering me right now?
"Alright. Remember the rules." Jeanist says through the intercom. "Your time starts now."
"He's gonna kill me!" I yell in the general direction I think Jeanist is in.
"What makes you say that?" Jeanist asks.
"I'm gonna kill you, Snowman!" Bakugo roars as he flies toward me.
"That!" I yelp and roll out of the way, blasting him with snow to keep him at bay.
"Then you better find a way to defend yourself." Jeanist steps off of the intercom.
I silently tell him to get fucked as I duck behind a snowbank for cover. I can't stay there for more than a few seconds, so I keep expanding my cover on both sides and move along. The room gets colder and colder the longer I keep this up. An idea sparks in me.
"Are you some kind of idiot?" Bakugo laughs, blowing apart a section of my cover. When he sees that I'm not there, he growls in frustration. "Stop being a coward! Come out and face me!"
He's not blasting recklessly. He must have learned from the Sports Festival. He's trying to sniff me out. I need a new strategy.
I patch the hole he put in my cover when I approach it.
"Gotcha." He blasts at me again. In that moment, after I've circled the entire room in snow, I pile it all on top of him, hardening it as much as possible. He falls to the floor in an angry ball of snow. I pack more on as he tries to blast his way out. "You fucking idiot! I can go all day! I won't lose to you!"
"You can go until you stop sweating." I keep adding snow. His blasts seem to be getting weaker the colder it gets. My plan is working. "Hard to do in the cold."
"I'm not giving up!"
"Bakugo has been immobilized for thirty seconds." Jeanist hops on the intercom. "Cooke wins."
"Are you okay?" I let all the snow evaporate. Bakugo is shivering.
"Shut up! I'm not weak!" His teeth chatter.
"Frostbite exists, I want to make sure you don't have it."
"I can beat frostbite!"
"Yeah, you know, after ... your skin turns blue and blisters."
"You got lucky beating me. You won't do it next time."
"Probably in a different arena, yeah, you're right. But in a small space like this, you can't launch large-scale attacks."
"Stop being so fucking agreeable. People are gonna walk all over you if you keep this shit up."
We rest up for a minute before Jeanist makes us go again. Over and over, we go until my joints are wooden and stiff. Bakugo is panting, holding onto his arm. Looks like he's at his limit too.
