This is it. The last day I'll (hopefully) ever have to put up with Jeanist. I get ready quickly. So does Bakugo. We finish packing up the stuff we don't need for today and meet Jeanist in his office.

"Well, you two are punctual this morning." Jeanist says. If I could see his face, I imagine he'd be smirking. "Could it be you're excited for a day of hero work? Or more likely, you're excited to hop on a train and go home this evening, aren't you? No matter. You'll put that energy to good use. We're patrolling today. Get your jeans on. I'll redo your hair."

I can't find the energy to be annoyed with him. Even as he brutalizes my hair, all I can think about is getting on the train out of here.

At the entrance, as Jeanist is giving us the once-over, he seems more sober than usual. He doesn't have any snarky remarks for us. I like this version of him less somehow.

We go out onto the street. I notice the streets aren't quite as full today. Is it because of Hosu? All I see are students rushing about to get to school on time. I can't wait to go back to that life.

"It's possible some villains were inspired by what happened at Hosu." Jeanist keeps his gaze forward. "That means they could be feeling bolder. This may just be a patrol, but keep your guards up."

"Yeah, yeah." Bakugo rolls his eyes.

"Here's a question for you both. Patrols are mainly meant to deter villains from committing any crimes. But they also have a secondary purpose. What is it?"

Bakugo smirks, eyes filled with fury. "If we see some bad guys, we can beat 'em up on the spot!"

"Incorrect." Jeanist sighs. "Cooke? Do you know the answer?"

"Ease the mind of the public?" I say.

"Exactly right. Our presence gives the public peace of mind." Jeanist nonchalantly waves at some middle school girls who call out to him. "This helps weave a tapestry of trust between the protectors and the protected."

"I think you just like getting recognized." Bakugo scoffs.

I have to hold in a laugh because I know he's right.

"Hey!" Some little kid behind us yells. "I've seen that blonde guy on TV before!"

Bakugo freezes. He looks at me like I'm supposed to know what to do.

"Interact with the kid." I hiss.

"I don't want to." He hisses back.

"Too bad." I catch him on the shoulder before he can do anything and turn him around to face the group of kids who stopped to talk to us.

"Yeah, on the news, a villain caught him and he almost cried like a baby!" The kid laughs, still pointing at Bakugo.

Bakugo gets so mad his hair nearly poofs out. I wish mine would do that.

"Calm down, Bakugo, he's just a kid." I put a hand on his arm to keep him at bay.

"Never too young to get your ass beat." He whispers.

"Legally, that is not true."

"What did you say to me?" Bakugo ignores me and gets right up in the kid's face.

The poor kid starts to cry.

"Have you really forgotten everything I've taught you?" Jeanist stares daggers into Bakugo. "Talk with them like a pro."

"Yeah, fine." Bakugo leans down to the kid's level. "Listen up. I wasn't helpless. I was coming up with ways to fight him. Sometimes a hero has to pretend he's been caught. You really think I would lose? You'll eat those words when I'm the new number one hero! You dumb kids'll never laugh at me again if you know what's good for you!"
