The day of the dinner is here. I'm supposed to be at Tenya's in two hours and I'm still trying to decide what to wear. I want to be cute, but also casual, but it's also dinner with his parents, so I maybe I need to be formal? I know I shouldn't be getting this stressed about an outfit, but I want so badly for Tenya and his parents to like me.
I have to leave in thirty minutes to catch my train. I don't have time to be so picky. Looking at all of my sweaters in my closet, I grab a simple white turtleneck. Pretty much all of my skirts will go with this. I rifle through my skirts, settling on a charcoal grey one with a white grid pattern. I throw those on over the thermal tights I'm already wearing. It looks cute, but it needs something else. A necklace maybe?
I put a dainty gold chain on, moving it until it looks just right. It's not quite there yet. Think, Jade. A pop of color? I grab a baby blue blazer and toss that on. It's perfect. Holy shit, I managed to do the impossible and pick a perfect outfit!
I pack my canvas bag full of the essentials, my phone, a charger, lip balm, and my wallet. Braiding my hair neatly over my shoulder, I call out to my parents that I'm leaving and run to the entryway. I slip on some white loafers from the shoe closet, grab my umbrella, and I'm out.
I spend most of the train ride trying to keep myself calm. It's just dinner. Dinner with the guy I have a giant crush on and his parents, who I've never met.
Following the little line on my phone, I come up to his house. Jesus, it's huge! It's easily four or five times the size of my house and very modern looking. Even if the Iidas live in the city, it feels like they're miles away from their neighbors. I imagine it would be nice to be a part of a neighborhood but still feel like you're secluded from everyone else. Despite it's sharp exterior, it looks very welcoming. I walk along the fence until I find the intercom.
I ring the doorbell, smoothing out my skirt.
A man's voice that I don't recognize comes on over the intercom. "You must be Jade, then?"
"Yes, sir." I reply meekly.
"I've unlocked the gate, come on in." Before the intercom switches off, I hear the man yell, "Tenya! Come down and greet your friend!"
I chuckle to myself as I open the gate and step into the beautiful garden. Even in the rain, it's absolutely gorgeous. I stick to the stone path until I reach the porch. There's an overhang that blocks the rain, so I close my umbrella and try to shake off some of the wetness before I knock on the door.
On the second knock, Tenya swings the door open. "Jade!" He beams. Only his smile could brighten up a rainy day.
"Hi!" I finish shaking out my umbrella and smile back at him.
"Welcome to my home." Tenya steps aside to let me in.
"Thank you for having me." I slip my shoes off and tuck them neatly away from the door. I slot my umbrella into the stand. After a second of debating, I give him a quick hug.
"We still have about an hour or so before dinner, so would you ... would you like to spend that time in my room?" I can feel him smiling against my ear as he holds me.
"Sure. Lead the way."
Tenya takes me upstairs in his giant, luxurious house that rivals almost any house I've seen even in America. I smile to myself seeing the little nameplate on his door. He must have made it when he was a little kid. Little stickers of books, beakers, and equations circle his name on the blue cardstock. In the corner, there's an Ingenium logo.
"I've been meaning to replace that thing." Tenya laughs awkwardly. "I made it when I was five. It's a little outdated ..."
"I think it's cute. Maybe I should make one for my room."
