Quirk Dodgeball

In the morning, I walk to the classroom alone, but find Iida in his seat already yet again.

"Good morning, Cooke!" He calls to me.

"Morning!" I walk over to him.

"How are you this morning? Have you had breakfast yet?"

"Not this morning. I kind of overslept." I laugh a little.

"You're here earlier than any of our classmates." He says.

"Not earlier than you." I lean forward to rest my elbows on the desk in front of him.

"Yes, I suppose that's true." He keeps his gaze respectfully trained on my face. "I'm sorry you overslept though."

"Don't worry about it. How about you? Did you eat breakfast?"

"I did. I had some pancakes with red bean paste, they were quite delicious." He says, digging in his bag for a second and pulling out a small tin-foil wrapped item. "Actually, I have a few that my mom packed for me as a snack. Take one. You should always eat in the mornings, even if it's just a little bit!"

"Oh, you don't have to-"

"I insist."

"Thank you." I take the pancake from him and unwrap it. It does smell good. We talk a little bit more as I eat. It's delicious, I'll have to find a recipe online.

Our classmates file in and I leave to take my seat. Once again, the schoolwork piles up as classes go on. Lunch flies by, and soon we're right back into hero training. Aizawa walks to the podium with his sleeping bag slung over his shoulder.

"All Might will be taking you for hero training again today." Aizawa is already zipping himself into his sleeping bag. "Change into your PE clothes and gather in the gym building."

"Mr. Aizawa!" Iida raises his hand. "If it's hero training, shouldn't we be wearing our costumes?"

"I'm just reading off the instructions All Might gave me. Take it up with him and let me sleep."

Iida goes quiet.

We file out of the classroom and into the locker rooms to change. Ashido and I talk about our families as we get dressed and I promise to text her pictures of my cat once I get home. We walk to the gym together, arriving at the same time as Denki and Kiri. We run up to talk to each other before All Might comes in.

Once all of us are gathered in the gym, All Might appears.

"Good, you've arrived!" He laughs, holding a large bag over his shoulder. "I'm sure you're all wondering what we'll be doing ..." He pauses for dramatic effect.

None of us say anything. Not even Iida, who was so determined to find out what we'd be doing.

"Dodgeball!" All Might shows off the bag full of balls. "We'll be taking it a little easy today, so it's just a friendly game of dodgeball, but ... you get to use your quirks!"

"Aren't you worried that someone will get hurt?" Iida raises his hand.

"We have Recovery Girl on standby for that very reason! The way this is going to work is we'll have two team captains, who get to choose their teams. Then you'll line up on the backsides of the court, I'll blow my whistle, and you all rush toward the middle! Toss the balls, don't get hit, and use your quirks in any way you see fit! If you get hit, you're out, unless you get his in the face, in which case, the person who threw it is out. If you catch the ball, the person who threw it is out! Sound simple enough?"

"Does he think we don't know how dodgeball works?" Kiri asks me.

"Who's to say?" I shrug. I'm still caught up on how much this school relies on Recovery Girl.

"Now, let's choose some team captains!" All Might pulls out a small bowl filled with slips of paper. Guess he really likes random chance. "Our first team captain is ... Young Kirishima!"

Kiri starts, but goes up to stand by All Might.

"Our other team captain will be ... Young Iida!"

Iida comes up on All Might's other side.

"Now, the two of you will play rock-paper-scissors and the winner will get first pick for their team! Begin!"

The two boys face each other and begin playing. After a few draws, Kiri ends up winning.

"I'll choose ... Cooke." Kiri points to me.

I jump, startled at being chosen. I've never been chosen for anything, let alone chosen first. I step to the side and let the rest of the teams be picked. In a turn of events that shocks no one, Iida chooses Midoriya first.

Soon enough, the class is split evenly, or as evenly as it can be with 21 students. I'm a little nervous about being on the same side as Bakugo, especially since he seems to have a grudge against Midoriya for some reason or another, but I suppose it's better than the alternative. At least this way, I won't be in his direct line of fire.

Denki and Ojiro are on my team as well, so I can't really complain. The teams line up on the backsides of the court. My throat starts to dry. I remember this game getting brutal in elementary school. I wonder if it's any different in high school?

As soon as All Might blows his whistle, I'm reminded of how much I actually despise dodgeball. I revert to my elementary school strategy of staying behind, blending into the background and collecting the balls as they hit the ground to supply to my teammates. As long as I have enough people in front of me, I can avoid being hit.

It's an absolute bloodbath for a while, which definitely does not encourage me to leave the safety of the background. I watch as Bakugo throws the balls with such force that they could easily decapitate someone and I thank whatever deity the exists that Bakugo is on my team.

Iida is also a force to be reckoned with, hitting people with near pinpoint accuracy. I need to stay away from his view as much as possible.

Eventually, my nightmare actualizes and it's down to just me and Iida. I make a snowbank to hide behind. As he throws balls to destroy my protection, I just make more, catching the balls within. I need a plan, I need to figure out what my next step is. I can't just keep hoarding all the balls, I need to do something.

"Stop being such a coward and actually fight!" Bakugo yells from the sidelines. "Just kill him already!"

"For once, I agree with Bakugo!" Iida throws another ball at me, which I catch within a snowbank. "We can go about this all day!"

Seems he can get quite competitive. Still, as he tosses his final ball into my snowbanks, I finally decide to come out from my cover. "Actually, we can go about this until you run out of balls."

Iida looks around frantically, trying to find just one more ball to throw. When he sees that there are none, he looks at me with an impressed curiosity.

"I'm sorry about this." I smile, but manipulate the snowbanks to release every ball at once with such a force that he has no chance to dodge. The balls knock Iida to the floor.

"Young Iida is out!" All Might blows his whistle while my team cheers.

I rush over to help Iida to his feet. His glasses are on the floor next to him, so I grab those too. They don't look broken, which makes me feel a lot better. I hand him his glasses.

"Thank you." He laughs as he slides his glasses back on and shakes my hand as a show of sportsmanship. "What an incredible strategy."

"I fully made that up on the spot." I let all the snow evaporate.

"That doesn't make it any less impressive."

"Are you okay?"

"I'm alright."

All Might releases us to change out and go home.

On the walk to the train station, Denki and I make plans to hang out this weekend at a bookstore that we both want to visit. We promise to text each other the finalized plan and go our separate ways.
